“Ungodly” Claims Spark Arrest: Apostle Alistar Chibanda in Doek & Slay Case
Accused: Apostle Alistar Chibanda | Charge: Transmission of False Data and Defamation
A developing controversy involving Zimbabwe’s prominent women’s movement has led to the arrest of a senior church leader. Apostle Alistar Chibanda, founder of Jesus Faith Church International, was taken into custody in Harare following allegations that he circulated false and defamatory information about the popular Doek & Slay event, publicly describing it as “ungodly” or “diabolical.”
Authorities allege that the apostle shared videos, images, and posts that misrepresented the women-only gathering and portrayed it as immoral, claims that organisers say were untrue and damaging to the brand’s reputation. In response, Doek & Slay organisers confirmed the arrest and reiterated their commitment to professionalism, integrity, and providing a safe space for women. The case has sparked nationwide debate around religious influence, freedom of expression, and accountability, with investigations still ongoing.
Behind Bars
The religious leader was picked up by law enforcement on December 19, 2025.
CYBER BULLYING & DEFAMATION
Current Status: Detained in Harare
Context: Organizers filed formal charges to protect their trademark.
The "Demonic" Label
Chibanda allegedly shared disturbing visual content, including a video of a woman urinating in public and others touching a security guard inappropriately. He claimed these incidents occurred at the "Doek & Slay" event to suggest it was a hub of "nzenza" (loose morals). Organisers insist these clips were taken out of context and were unrelated to the event.
Just prior to his arrest, Chibanda issued a "prophetic warning" claiming that "satanic hosts" were gathering to cause premature deaths between December 20, 2025, and January 1, 2026, explicitly linking the popular event to spiritual darkness. Authorities say these claims were unfounded and part of the allegedly defamatory narrative.
Police investigations are centering on the allegation that the videos and social media posts Chibanda shared were fake, unrelated to the event, or deliberately contextualized to defame the Doek & Slay brand and its 23,000+ patrons. The organisers have confirmed reporting the matter to authorities to protect the reputation of their flagship women’s event.
"Doek & Slay" Fires Back
"We Will Not Be Taken Lightly"
The organizers released a blistering press statement confirming the arrest. They emphasized that "Doek & Slay" is a legally protected trademark and a safe space for women.
"Any attempts to misrepresent, defame, or unlawfully exploit our brand will not be taken lightly," the statement read. They reiterated their commitment to professionalism, noting that the investigation into Chibanda's conduct is now proceeding through legal channels.
A History of Controversy
This is not Apostle Chibanda's first clash with major brands.
THE NYARADZO SAGA (2022)
Outcome: Public Apology
In Nov 2022, Chibanda was forced to apologize to Nyaradzo Funeral Insurance after running an online campaign against them based on unverified information.
THE EVENT SCALE
Attendance: 23,000+
Despite being called "diabolical" by Chibanda and Apostle Joel, the event features top artists like Winky D and is viewed as a major economic driver.
What's Next? Chibanda remains in custody assisting police with investigations. Further communication is expected from the Doek & Slay team.
