Mugabe Jnr Dodges Jail Time, But Given Five-Year Drug Sentence Suspension

Robert Mugabe Jnr, son of the late former President, has been convicted of possessing dagga and fined US$300. Crucially, the court handed down a three-month prison sentence that was wholly suspended, effectively giving him a five-year clean slate—but any similar drug offense within that period will lead to immediate incarceration.
Final Judgment: Suspended Jail Time and Fine
Robert Mugabe Jnr was convicted for possession of two grammes of dagga. Magistrate Lisa Mutendereki imposed a three-month prison sentence, which was wholly suspended on a strict condition: he must not commit a similar drug offense in the next five years.
In the event of a conviction for drug possession within that five-year period, the father of two will be immediately thrown into jail for three months without the option of a fine.
In addition to the suspended sentence, Mugabe Jnr was ordered to pay a US$300 fine for the possession charge. Failure to pay the fine will result in four months of direct imprisonment.
Judicial Stance on Drug Abuse
Magistrate Lisa Mutendereki acknowledged the small quantity of dagga recovered was "quite insignificant." However, she stressed the court’s responsibility to participate in the national fight against drug and substance abuse, which has become prevalent.
The court considered several mitigating factors, including that Mugabe Jnr is a youthful offender who pleaded guilty, saving the court time. These factors were key in granting him leniency through the wholly suspended sentence.
The Details of the Arrest
Robert Mugabe Jnr was arrested last month by ZRP Avondale officers deployed on a traffic blitz along Second Street Extension, Harare. He was initially pulled over while driving his silver Honda Fit (AGY 5850) against oncoming traffic.
During the stop, police conducted a search of his black sling bag, which led to the seizure of two sachets of dagga, one pack of rolling paper, and a white dagga crusher.
