"Go To Hell, Leave Me Alone": Tererai Mugwadi Hits Back at Addiction Claims
Sona Reporter | Sona Headlines
Urban Grooves icon Tererai Mugwadi is at the center of a social media firestorm after a video of her performance at the Shoko Festival went viral. While fans and fellow artists call for professional rehabilitation over perceived substance abuse, the songbird has fiercely dismissed the concerns, telling her critics to "leave me alone."
"I Don't Need Rehab": Tererai’s Fierce Response
In an exclusive interview with H-Metro, Tererai Mugwadi firmly rejected the calls for her to enter a rehabilitation facility. She stated, "I am not a drug addict and I don't need rehab... For now, they must leave me alone to handle my personal life."
The singer claims she is "in the right frame of mind, and in the right space," focusing on becoming a better person while spending most of her time at work in the CBD.
Tererai also lashed out at critics, suggesting they are seeking "personal clout." She challenged them, stating, "The same people who are making noise and these suggestions are not psychologists, by the way." She insisted that the determination of alcoholism or substance abuse should be left to a professional psychologist.
She also pointed out that there are genuine cases of people who "dearly need rehabilitation more than I do."
The Industry Divides on Substance Abuse Claims
The viral video triggered immediate and strong reactions from peers. Rapper Desmond “Stunner” suggested she urgently needed to check in at Matrix Rehabilitation Centre, while South Africa-based singer Nox Guni urged the nation to show her love and support during this difficult time.
Blogger and talent scout Plot Mhako weighed in, stating that Tererai needed compassion, not ridicule. Mhako shared a brief history of Tererai's past challenges with alcohol, urging the public and music community to focus on offering concrete help rather than adding to the social media shaming.
The Viral Shoko Festival Incident
The debate ignited after footage circulated of her performance at this year’s Shoko Festival. Viewers swiftly described her stage presence as "lifeless" and "boring," immediately connecting the appearance to concerns about substance abuse and Tererai’s mental health.
Tererai, however, dismissed the criticism as part of a trend to portray her negatively, saying, "In showbiz, there are good and bad days on stage."
Music and Future Plans
Despite the backlash, the immensely talented vocalist vowed not to "throw in the towel." She stated she is "always doing a lot of music" and mentioned her recent single, ‘Muchibage,’ featuring Maskiri.
However, she confirmed her busy schedule is currently dominated by her job outside of music: "At the moment, work is keeping me busy. I work somewhere in the CBD where I spend most of my time."
The "Tinodanana" hit-maker insists that social media trolls will not deter her from living the life she prefers. She urged genuinely concerned people to engage with her directly rather than making negative assumptions or seeking relevance with others online.
