Wicknell Chivayo and Lucy Muteke: Family Reveals What Was Not Recovered After Crash!

Written By: Paul Zinyoro | Local News Desk at Sona Headlines

The devastating helicopter crash that claimed the lives of businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife Lucy Muteke has culminated in a somber realization for their grieving families: they will have to proceed with the burial without having recovered all of the couple's remains.

SEEKING CLOSURE

Following extensive forensic examinations and DNA testing by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the couple will be laid to rest at Glen Forest Cemetery on Thursday, October 8.

Dispelling Morbid Rumors

The intense fire that engulfed the aircraft at Kudenga Farm severely damaged the bodies, prompting wild speculation on social media regarding the state of the remains recovered by authorities.

No Intact Skulls Recovered

Family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo addressed journalists on Monday, rejecting claims that investigators had recovered intact heads. “There has been speculation on social media that there were four head skulls that were found. That is not true,” he stated firmly.

The Final Discoveries

He explained the grim reality of the crash site: “We did not find any head. There were some pieces of skulls that were suspected to be head skulls, but they were not. The last things that were found were Sir Wicknell’s wrist watch and my daughter-in-law’s watch.”

The Identification Challenge

The severity of the September 30 crash made visual identification impossible for all five victims, which included Chivayo, Muteke, the two pilots (Calvin Tafirei Soda and Courage Mutavirwa), and a security aide (Saneliswe Magagula).

Scientific Confirmation

Investigators took the recovered bodies into Criminal Investigations Department (CID) custody. Forensic specialists then conducted exhaustive DNA testing to match and establish the identities of the highly compromised remains.

Process Concluded

Authorities officially confirmed the identities of the five victims through this forensic process, allowing the grieving families to finally move forward with burial arrangements despite the incomplete recovery.

A Public Farewell

Despite the harrowing and unusual circumstances surrounding the condition of the remains, both families have agreed to host a public funeral to allow the couple's vast network to pay their final respects.

The Venue

The couple will be laid to rest at Glen Forest Cemetery in Harare on Thursday. The family reportedly selected this location due to Chivayo and Muteke's extensive connections within the city.

No Conventional Viewing

Given the state of the remains, the funeral will proceed without a conventional body viewing. As previously confirmed by church leaders, the couple will be buried in coffins, a departure from traditional Johane Masowe yeChishanu rites.

A Plea for Respect

The necessity for the Chivayo family to hold a press briefing to dispel morbid social media rumors about intact skulls is a grim reflection of the digital age. Grieving families should not have to fight misinformation regarding the physical state of their loved ones' remains. Herbert Chivayo’s clarification brings necessary dignity back to the proceedings.

Finding Closure

The confirmation of DNA results marks the end of an agonizing wait for all the families involved in the Marondera tragedy. While proceeding with a burial knowing some remains are missing is undoubtedly painful, Thursday's ceremony at Glen Forest will finally allow friends, associates, and the nation to pay their final respects and begin the healing process.
