The Spark: H-Metro and Kurai Makore

The legal battle stems primarily from an explosive interview Thomas Mapfumo granted to H-Metro on or about August 11, 2026. In the court summons, Vava’s legal team asserts that Mapfumo caused damaging statements to be published, portraying Vava as a manipulative and deceitful figure.

The Makore Influence Mapfumo allegedly identified Vava as someone actively influencing Kurai Makore against him. The summons states: “In their natural and ordinary meaning, alternatively by implication, the statements meant that the plaintiff was improperly interfering in the relationship between Mapfumo and Makore.”

Damage to Standing Vava firmly argues that the statements attributed to the legendary musician were entirely false, highly inappropriate, and critically damaging to his professional and personal standing in society.

Podcast Bombshells: Witchcraft and Burner Accounts

The conflict escalated significantly following a broadcast on Nehanda TV and YouTube. During the podcast, which reached both local and international audiences, band manager Cuthbert Chiromo doubled down on the accusations, unleashing highly personal attacks against Vava.

1. The "Witch" Label Chiromo allegedly described Vava as a "witch", claiming he possessed a "spirit of witchcraft." He accused Vava of attending the funeral of the late Lancelot Mapfumo and presenting himself as Mukanya's representative without any authority or consent.

2. Phantom Social Media Accounts Chiromo also claimed that Vava operated and controlled numerous fake social media accounts specifically to turn Mapfumo’s loyal fans and supporters against the music legend.

3. Accusations of Theft The summons further notes that labeling Vava a "thief" directly imputes criminality. The lawyers stated that these statements painted Vava as "dishonest and criminally inclined; deceitful and untrustworthy; lacking integrity and moral standing."

Drawing Battle Lines at the High Court

Vava’s legal representatives systematically dismantled the allegations in their filings. “The plaintiff is not a thief, does not improperly manipulate Mr Makore or the first defendant, and does not operate covert social media accounts for the purposes alleged,” they argued.

The Legal Teams Vava is represented by top attorney Tavenhave Machingauta, while Thomas Mapfumo and Cuthbert Chiromo have retained Charles Warara to mount their defense.

Failed Ultimatum The US$50,000 claim was allegedly aggravated by Mapfumo and Chiromo’s outright failure to retract the defamatory statements by the August 21, 2026 deadline set by Vava's team.

Case HCH 4496/26 A formal notice of appearance to defend has since been filed at the High Court of Zimbabwe. The defendants will now have the opportunity to prove their claims before a judge.

Sona Verdict: Reputation on Trial

The spectacular fallout between Blessing Vava and the Blacks Unlimited camp highlights the toxic underbelly of music industry management. What may have started as an internal camp disagreement has now spilled into the public domain, dragging the legendary name of Thomas "Mukanya" Mapfumo into a messy US$50,000 High Court dispute.

Defamation cases are notoriously difficult to defend when specific words like "witch" and "thief" are broadcast to international audiences on platforms like Nehanda TV and H-Metro. The burden of proof will now rest heavily on Charles Warara, representing Mapfumo and Chiromo, to either prove these allegations to be factually true or demonstrate that they were fair comment—a tall order in a court of law.

As it stands, the claims contained in Vava’s summons remain allegations until determined by the High Court. However, regardless of the verdict, the brand damage to the legacy of one of Zimbabwe's greatest musical exports is already palpable.
