Hakainde Hichilema Wins Second Term as Zambia Election Ends in Victory Amid Tensions and Fraud Claims
Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema has won re-election for a second five-year term, according to electoral authorities, after a tense race marked by allegations of fraud, raid operations, and brief vote-counting suspensions.
Official results released by the Electoral Commission of Zambia in the early hours of Tuesday morning showed the incumbent receiving 61.4 percent of valid votes, securing a decisive victory over his primary challenger, Brian Mundubile, who secured 38 percent.
"I therefore declare Hichilema Hakainde S to be president-elect of the Republic of Zambia this 18th day of August, 2026," announced Electoral Commission chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis.
Hichilema, 64, noted he was "truly humbled by the trust you have placed in our hands." Addressing opponents' voters, he added: "We hear you, and we will continue to work for you."
Hundreds of UPND supporters poured into the streets of the capital dressed in red, dancing, singing, and setting off firecrackers to mark Hichilema’s seventh bid for the presidency.
Tensions mounted sharply in the days following the August 13 polling. On election night, law enforcement conducted a high-stakes raid resulting in 11 arrests amid gunfire exchanges at opposition leader Brian Mundubile's residence.
Authorities stated the raid targeted illegal militia possessing military-grade arms. The opposition NRPUP disputed this, stating the raid was an illegal assault on Mundubile’s home that wounded an MP.
Counting was suspended for hours following reports of assault on polling staff and missing ballot boxes. Mundubile called for an independent investigation into form alteration, which Hichilema’s team denied.
International monitoring missions, including observers from the European Union, reported that while election day voting was largely orderly, pre-election conditions suffered structural inequities.
"Late legal changes, legal uncertainty, and unequal campaign conditions distorted the playing field," noted Michael McNamara, chief observer for the European Union mission.
Home to 22 million people and Africa's second-largest copper producer, Zambia maintains an unbroken tradition of peaceful multiparty transfers of power dating back to 1991.
A Second Mandate Amidst Pre-Election Strains
Hakainde Hichilema’s second-term mandate provides legislative continuity for Zambia's economic restructuring and copper production targets. However, addressing opposition grievances and restoring confidence after high-profile raids and electoral pauses will remain his administration's paramount political challenge.
