76 Victims Duped: Hazel Mafu Spends Another Night in Custody Over US$624K & ZiG1.2M Car Fraud

Harare businesswoman Hazel Mafu, who is facing massive fraud charges after allegedly duping 76 people of over US$624,000 and ZiG1.2 million in a bogus vehicle import scheme, has been forced to spend another night in police custody.

DELAYED JUSTICE: Award-winning CEO Hazel Mafu remains behind bars as the Harare Magistrates' Court rolls over her bail application due to time constraints, leaving 76 victims demanding answers.

The 35-year-old director of Hezy Motors Logistics, who made headlines last year for flaunting a lavish birthday tour across Europe, initially appeared in court over the weekend. She was back in the dock yesterday, but her case was rolled over to today for bail considerations due to time constraints.

Inside the Elaborate Vehicle Import Scheme

Prosecutors have detailed how dozens of unsuspecting car buyers were lured by competitive prices and false promises over a multi-year period.

Deceptive Marketing Tactics The State alleges that between January 2022 and February 2025, Hazel Mafu aggressively marketed vehicle importation services. She utilized various online platforms, social media, and electronic and print media to cast a wide net for potential clients.
False Promises and Missed Deliveries Prosecutors charge that she misrepresented her capacity to source and deliver imported vehicles within agreed timeframes at highly competitive prices. Trusting her pristine public profile, 76 complainants paid large sums for vehicles that never arrived.
The Staggering Financial Toll Despite receiving the funds, Mafu failed to deliver. The State contends the total prejudice amounts to an exact figure of US$624,958.96 and ZiG1,275,878.35. To date, not a single cent has been recovered.

Bail Bid Rolled Over Amid Time Constraints

The sheer volume of complainants and details in the docket has slowed down the initial judicial proceedings.

Hazel Mafu remains in custody as her legal team battles for her pre-trial release.

Delayed Bail Hearing After her initial weekend appearance, Mafu was back in court yesterday. However, the presiding magistrate rolled the matter over to today, citing time constraints, forcing the businesswoman to spend another night in holding cells.
The State's Position The State, represented by prosecutor Zvikomborero Mupasa, has laid out the extensive charges, emphasizing the severity of the alleged prejudice and the large number of victims involved in the scheme.

"Every Moment Feels Cinematic": The European Tour

The multi-million dollar fraud allegations sit in stark contrast to the luxurious lifestyle Mafu actively promoted on social media.

Last year, as clients allegedly waited for their cars, Mafu treated herself to a multi-nation European holiday for her 35th birthday.

A Continental Spoil She unapologetically spoiled herself with a holiday touring France, Rome, Spain, and Germany, sharing glamorous highlights with her online followers.
"Normalise Rest" Posing at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, she posted: “On top of the World, Effiel Tower, Paris! Every moment feels cinematic. Even the strongest engine needs a fuel stop. Let’s normalise rest as part of success. Comment with your favourite way to recharge... It’s the guide for me.”

The Fall of an Award-Winning 'CEO'

The scandal marks a stunning fall from grace for a woman who was widely celebrated as a beacon of female empowerment in business.

11 Awards in a Single Year Before her arrest, Mafu had won numerous awards for corporate excellence. Last year alone, she scooped up her 11th award, claiming the prestigious Outstanding Young CEO silver award.
Media Darling and Keynote Speaker She effectively leveraged her business facade to become a media darling, frequently invited onto national radio shows to "tell her story." She was also a highly sought-after guest speaker at women empowerment forums, cementing a level of public trust that prosecutors say she ultimately exploited.
