“A Pain Too Deep to Bear”: Tears Flow as Six Mujuru Family Members Are Laid to Rest in Chivhu

A father's unimaginable agony culminated in a somber farewell. The bodies of six family members—a mother and her five young children who tragically perished in a horrific head-on collision along the Harare-Masvingo Highway—were laid to rest in Chivhu on Sunday amidst an outpouring of national grief.

As the nation unites in mourning, devastating details have emerged regarding the family's journey. Lilian Mujuru and her children had left their home in Tynwald North, Harare, and were traveling to a church conference when their Toyota Corolla collided with a truck near Mvuma at 9:50 AM last Thursday. The weekend's funeral proceedings marked the devastating close of one of Zimbabwe's most tragic highway accidents.

“My Life is Now a Prison”

During the mourning period at a Harare funeral parlour before the burial, a devastated Ronald Mujuru struggled to process the total loss of his immediate family.

A Lifetime of Grief

Speaking to those gathered to comfort him, a heartbroken Mujuru expressed the depth of his despair: “My life now feels like a prison. This will affect me until my own death.”

A Community in Mourning

The memorial was packed with a diverse cross-section of the community paying their respects. Mourners included church members, the children's teachers and classmates, devoted Dynamos F.C. supporters (who know Ronald as a passionate fan), and friends from his previous tenure managing local musician Andy Muridzo.

The Journey and The Victims

The family was en route to a church conference when tragedy struck at the 246-kilometre peg near Mvuma.

ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the identities of the six deceased, who all perished at the scene of the head-on collision with a Mercedes-Benz heavy truck.

Presidential Condolences and Final Farewell

Minister Mhona's Visit

Prior to the burial, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona attended the funeral parlour. Fighting back tears, Mhona addressed the mourners, revealing that President Emmerson Mnangagwa had been deeply moved by the tragic news.

A Message from President Mnangagwa

“We have been saddened by the loss of six lives from the same family in a road traffic accident,” Minister Mhona stated. “This is so painful. We have lost as a nation. President Mnangagwa is aware of this incident, and he has sent me to express his condolences on his behalf and those of his two deputies.”

Laid to Rest in Chivhu

Following the emotional memorial proceedings in Harare, the bodies of Lilian and her five children were transported to Chivhu on Sunday. Hundreds of grieving relatives, friends, and community members gathered to lay the family to rest in a solemn, tear-filled ceremony.

The Dark Side of Social Media

Minister Mhona's Plea to Stop Filming

During his address, Minister Mhona issued a passionate plea to the public to stop the morbid trend of recording accident scenes. “I urge the people of Zimbabwe to value our culture and tradition by not posting videos and photographs of accident victims on social media. Let us consider how such videos affect relatives of the victims. That is why the police first find the next of kin before informing the public.”

ZRP and ZACC Dismiss False Rumors

Prior to the funeral, the ZRP and ZACC had to publicly intervene to dispel dangerous misinformation. Viral claims suggested the accident was caused by a high-speed police chase or a ZACC operation. ZACC Commissioner Kindness Paradza and ZRP's Paul Nyathi both confirmed there was zero evidence to support these claims, urging the public to stop spreading fake news during a time of profound grief.
