Ideology, Not Science: Caster Semenya Denounces IOC's Sex Testing Policy and Calls Out Kirsty Coventry

CAPE TOWN — Double Olympic champion Caster Semenya has launched a scathing attack on the International Olympic Committee (IOC), denouncing their newly reinstated sex testing policy as "an ideology" rather than science. She has announced plans to challenge the ban on intersex and trans athletes, encouraging fellow Olympians to join her in a formidable class-action lawsuit.

The IOC's new 10-page policy document effectively bans transgender women and significantly restricts athletes with Differences in Sex Development (DSD) from competing in female categories starting at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. For Semenya, the policy is not just a professional blow—it is a deeply personal betrayal by a fellow African leader, IOC President Kirsty Coventry.

The Great Africa Betrayal: Why Caster Semenya is Slamming Kirsty Coventry

Speaking at a press conference in Cape Town, Semenya aimed her frustration directly at IOC President Kirsty Coventry. As a Zimbabwean and the first woman and African to hold the office, Coventry was expected by many to be a champion for athletes from the global South.

A Lack of Empathy

“Personally, for her as a leader, she’s an African. I’m sure she understands how we as Africans, we are coming from... you cannot control genetics,” Semenya said. “For her being a woman coming from Africa, knowing how African women or women in the global South are affected by that, of course, it causes harm.”

"Ticking a Box"

Semenya accused Coventry and the IOC of fake consultation, revealing that athletes were only sent a letter the day the policy was published. "If you’re going to consult, consult with a genuine heart. Don’t consult because you’re ticking the box. Unfortunately, they have ticked a wrong box."

The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics Rule

The IOC is returning to methods abandoned in 1999, utilizing genetic testing to enforce strict biological categories.

The IOC announced that starting with the 2028 LA Games, eligibility for any female category event will be limited to biological females, determined on the basis of a one-time SRY gene screening.

A Failed Relic of the Past

Chromosomal sex testing was previously used between 1968 and 1996 before being abandoned due to scientific concerns regarding its effectiveness. The tests often caused severe identity crises, depression, and social isolation. Semenya noted: "It came as a failure. And that’s why it was dropped."

A Disrespect for Women

Under the new rules, girls will be required to take the test from age 15. "For you as a woman, why will you be tested to prove that you fit? It’s like now we need to prove that we are worthy as women to take part in sports. That’s a disrespect for women," Semenya stated.

A Decade of Trauma

Semenya has become the global figurehead for this battle. She is a woman who has lived her entire life as a female, yet the IOC’s new document shockingly refers to people like her as "biological males."

The 2009 Berlin Shock

At age 18, preparing for the Berlin World Championships, authorities sent her for what she thought was a doping test. Instead, it was a gynecological exam. She learned she had XY chromosomes and high testosterone produced by undescended testicles. Authorities told her she needed surgery to remove them to continue racing.

Toxic "Remedies"

After Semenya refused the unnecessary operation, she was forced to take testosterone-lowering medication. The drugs caused extreme fatigue, nausea, headaches, and brain fog. When she stopped taking the medication to save her health, she was barred from competing in her favorite 800-meter race.

Ideology Over Science

Contradicting Their Own Data

The IOC claims that there is a "10-12 per cent Male performance advantage" in running for DSD athletes. However, just five years ago, the IOC held that reducing testosterone eliminated any potential advantage. Semenya responded sharply: "Based on what? There’s no scientific proof about what has been said. It’s an ideology."

The Trump Factor

The IOC’s 'new science' conveniently aligns with the political views of US President Donald Trump, who moved to ban trans athletes from all sports. With Los Angeles hosting the 2028 Olympics, many view the new policy as a political maneuver to avoid conflict with the American administration.

The Class Action Lawsuit

Despite claiming last year to have ended her seven-year legal challenge, the severity of the IOC's new policy has forced Semenya back to the battlefield.

"We Are Going to Make Noise"

“I will encourage athletes to come together as a class action... because this does not make sense. It does not save women’s sport,” she announced. "I’m fighting for women’s dignity. Those who say, ‘I am not going to be tested to prove that I’m a woman’… I will encourage them to do that to stop this nonsense."
