Huge Breakthrough: Minister Mahendere Breaks Barriers with Historic Nomination

Harare, Zimbabwe — Gospel sensation Minister Michael Mahendere has described his nomination in the Outstanding Male Musician category as both humbling and historic. In a move that has shifted the landscape of Zimbabwean music, he stands as the only gospel artist in a category traditionally dominated by secular heavyweights.

THE ANTHEM: His 2025 hit "Messiah" has been credited with bridging the gap between church and mainstream culture.

A Historic Breakthrough

For years, the "Outstanding Male Musician" category has been the preserve of secular artists. Mahendere’s inclusion marks a significant moment for the gospel genre, which is often relegated to specialized categories rather than the center of mainstream music honors.

"It shows that gospel music can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with any other genre," Mahendere stated.

Clash of Titans

Mahendere finds himself in arguably the most competitive category of the awards season. He is nominated alongside:

  1. Freeman HKD: The Zimdancehall giant.
  2. Jah Prayzah: The chart-topping contemporary superstar.

His presence alone has rewritten the narrative, proving that gospel music commands the same national attention as Zimbabwe's biggest secular pop acts.

"Messiah": The 2025 Anthem

Central to this nomination is the track "Messiah", which dominated 2025. Originally released as a gospel declaration, it quickly transcended religious boundaries to become a nationwide anthem.

Throughout the year, the song was inescapable—blasting from kombis in Harare’s busy streets to being played in bars, social gatherings, and parties.

Music analysts noted the rarity of a gospel song receiving such heavy rotation in secular spaces. Its catchy melody and bold production made it a hit regardless of the listener's religious affiliation.

"People were looking for something uplifting, something that speaks to the soul," Mahendere explained. "Messiah reminded people that no matter what is happening around us, there is hope and victory."

The Minister's Reaction

“I am very happy and excited. This nomination is not just for me but for the gospel movement as a whole," Mahendere said.

“To be recognised among such great musicians is an honour I don’t take lightly. Winning would be special, but even this nomination is already a win. It tells me that the message is reaching people, and that is what matters most.”
