Warriors Coach Demands Zimbabwe Stop Exporting Talent, Urges League to Emulate South Africa

Fresh from a gut-wrenching 2025 AFCON elimination, Warriors coach Marian Marinica has issued a radical ultimatum to Zimbabwean football. Demanding an end to the "nursery" status of the local league, Marinica has urged authorities to stop exporting top talent and instead emulate the high-stakes domestic model of South Africa to ensure future success on the continent.

"Can We Become An Importing Country?"

Marinica, who has been at the helm for just 40 days, pointed to Bafana Bafana's success as the blueprint. “Instead of being an exporting country of talent, can we become an importing country? This way, maybe we can compete for trophies with our clubs, have better-prepared players for the national team and start rebuilding,” he challenged.

The coach emphasized that the PSL must produce players ready for CAF Champions League intensity. He noted that South Africa's core strength lies in local players who regularly compete at the highest continental level, a standard Zimbabwe must reach to compete for major trophies.

The Morocco Heartbreak

The Warriors' campaign ended in dramatic fashion on December 29, 2025. Despite a potent attack that scored in every match, a late handball by captain Marvelous Nakamba allowed Oswin Appollis to convert an 84th-minute penalty, sealing a 3-2 victory for South Africa and sending Zimbabwe home at the group stage for the sixth time.

Recognition of Bravery

While the exit was painful, businessman Wicknell Chivayo softened the blow by gifting the squad US$250,000 (approx. R4.5 million) on New Year's Eve. Chivayo praised the team's "fighting spirit," stating: “Where others see a loss, I see BRAVERY and EFFORT, which I believe must be given appropriate RECOGNITION.”

Zimbabwe lost 3-2 after a competitive match. The winner was decided by a late penalty following a handball by Marvelous Nakamba.

The focus now shifts to the 2027 AFCON Qualifiers, which are scheduled to begin in March 2026 under the new ZIFA executive led by Nqobile Magwizi.
