Zimdancehall heavyweight Sylvester "Freeman" Chizanga has opened up about the dark side of his massive success. In a candid revelation, the HKD Boss admitted that the pressure of his exploding career in 2025 forced him to rely on sleeping tablets to cope with severe burnout and a schedule that spiraled out of control.

As he approaches his 38th birthday on June 22, the "Joina City" hitmaker reflects on the physical toll of consistency and his plans to conquer international stages in Poland and Germany in 2026.

Battling Burnout

Success in the Zimbabwean music industry often requires a relentless work ethic, but Freeman admits he pushed the limits too far last year. The demand for the HKD brand meant he was performing at up to three shows per day, particularly during the festive season.

"At one point, I had to take sleeping tablets because the situation had spiralled out of control, and I had no choice," Freeman revealed. The adrenaline of performing multiple times a night made it impossible to wind down naturally, leading to severe insomnia and exhaustion.

Recognizing the danger of fatigue on the road, Freeman took proactive steps to protect his team. "It was a tight schedule that prompted me to employ relief drivers to avoid road accidents," he explained. This professional approach likely averted tragedy, a common occurrence in an industry where artists often drive themselves between gigs late at night.

International Expansion

Having started his career in 2009, Freeman is no longer just a local sensation. For the first half of 2026, he has lined up a series of major international performances:

Poland & Germany

New Territories: Expanding the Zimdancehall sound into Central Europe.

United Kingdom

Returning King: Freeman noted, "I am no longer a newcomer there," signaling his established fanbase in the UK.

"I am not bragging about my international breakthrough; I am simply saying that we are celebrating the Lord’s mercy, which has brought us this far," he reflected humbly.

The HKD Festival Brand

Consistency is Freeman's hallmark. Although the annual HKD Festival is scheduled for October—seven months away—planning has already begun.

"After evaluating last year’s edition, which lived up to expectations, we never rest," Freeman told the press. "I challenged my team to start preparing for the HKD Festival for 2026. I always do this to ensure that I keep them busy, and we can win together as a clique."

Empowering the Next Generation

Freeman is widely regarded as a "torchbearer" for youth in Zimbabwe. He emphasized that his success is meaningless if he doesn't bring others along.

The Strategy:

  • Allocating Slots: "When I hold my shows, I make sure there is a slot for youngsters and upcoming stars."
  • Inclusivity: He specifically mentioned prioritizing female artists, a demographic often overlooked in the genre.

"I was assisted by others before, and it is my turn to return the favour by helping others," he concluded.
