Rebecca Malope & Sipho Makhabane Shut Down HICC - Golden Oldies Reclaim the Throne

Goosebumps & Nostalgia: The Old Guard Reclaims the Throne at HICC

Event: The Grateful Experience | Status: Sold Out | Vibe: Electric

It was a night where the "Golden Oldies" schooled the youth on what a real concert feels like. The Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) was packed to the rafters on Saturday night as Zimbabweans rekindled a decades-long romance with South African gospel royalty, Rebecca Malope and Sipho "Big Fish" Makhabane.

Royalty on Stage

Two giants of African gospel proved why they are timeless.

The moment she walked on stage, the house fell silent before exploding. Opening with "Njalo," Malope delivered with the fire and electric energy of someone half her age. Tears flowed as she told the crowd:

"My Zimbabwe, you are family. Tonight you reminded me why I started singing. My heart is home."

The gentle giant stepped in like a man preaching a sacred story. When he began "Over and Over," the HICC transformed into a 5,000-seater church. Fans knelt on the cold floor, weeping in worship as Makhabane declared, "Zimbabwe, you are special."

Vinyl vs. Playlists

While today’s youth speak of Reels, Saturday belonged to the cassette tape generation.

THE FASHION

Sunday Best

Elegant hats, vintage bling, and matching church uniforms filled the arena.

THE MEMORIES

1994 Vibes

The crowd sang word-for-word, evoking memories of ZTV’s "Gospel Hour" marathons.

The Worship Army

Local stars refused to be overshadowed, serving hit after seamless hit.

  • Minister Mahendere: Ran the stage like a general.
  • Takesure Zamar: Floated in with silky harmonies.
  • Eleana Makombe: Took it home with soulful chants.
  • Supporting Acts: Nyasha Mutonhori, The Cherayis, and Blessing Jedthun.

A Blessing, Not A Stunt

The Toyota Aqua Surprise

Just when the crowd thought it was over, lights dimmed for a massive surprise. John Makombe celebrated his 40th birthday by giving back, not for clout, but for gratitude.

THE WINNER

Farai Mugwambi

Bought his ticket on the very day of the show.

"This is not a gimmick. It’s my way of thanking God." — John Makombe

As Big Fish said in closing: "We must do this again."
