Chibadura’s Stolen Tombstone: Family Breaks Silence As Dignity Is Finally Restored!

Honouring a Legend: John ‘Mr Chitungwiza’ Chibadura’s Dignity Finally Restored

Legend: John Chibadura | Location: Unit L Cemetery, Chitungwiza

More than 25 years after his passing, the family of Sungura legend John Chibadura has revealed a heartbreaking truth — the original tombstone they erected in his honour was stolen by thieves shortly after his burial. For decades, the grave of the man affectionately known as “Mr Chitungwiza” stood incomplete, a painful reminder of the hardships his family endured.

A tribute to the legendary Sungura musician, Leonard Dembo

But on Friday, hope was restored. Thanks to a compassionate Good Samaritan, a new tombstone now stands proudly at his resting place, bringing dignity, closure, and renewed honour to a musician whose impact continues to echo across generations.

A Grave Violation

The shocking revelation of how thieves raided the final resting place of a national hero.

Nelia Chibadura, the musician's widow, revealed the heartbreaking news: "When John passed, I erected a tombstone in 2000, but it was stolen." For years, the grave at Unit L Cemetery was left with only a simple headstone, a stark contrast to the massive legacy Chibadura left behind.

A Family's Hardship

Nelia spoke candidly about the difficulties the family faced after Chibadura's death at age 42 on August 4, 1999.

  1. Lost Home: "We lost our home in Chitungwiza to a relative."
  2. Relocation: "I had to move the children to my rural home in Domboshava."
  3. Breadwinner: "I became a breadwinner at a very young age... Raising the children alone often felt like a nightmare."

The Music Lives On

Eldest son John Chibadura Jr spoke of the challenges of maintaining his father's legacy in a tough industry. "All our earnings go into hiring instruments... Maintaining our father’s grave was a dream we could not afford. Today fills us with hope."

Family friend Pamela "Sahwira" Chitiyo noted that the restoration brings closure not just to the family, but to the legions of fans who still revere Chibadura's music.
