DStv Under Siege: Massive 1.4 Million Subscriber Drop Shakes MultiChoice

DStv in Freefall: 1.4 Million Subscribers Gone — Can Canal+ Save It?

Crisis Report: MultiChoice Bleeds Numbers | New Owner: Canal+ Group

MultiChoice is facing a subscriber exodus. The latest figures reveal a rapid decline in DStv users, raising serious alarms for its new shareholder, Canal+. As the pay-TV giant loses its grip on the African market, the French media conglomerate has unveiled an aggressive turnaround strategy to stop the bleeding.

The Scale of the Exodus

The latest data paints a grim picture of DStv's current standing in the market.

SUBSCRIBERS LOST

Year-on-Year Decline

1.4 Million users have left the platform.

REMAINING BASE

Current Active Users

Down to 13.1 Million from 14.5 Million.

LINEAR TV HIT

FY 2025 Impact

Total active linear subscribers dropped by 2.8 Million.

Why Are People Leaving?

The decline began with DStv Premium but has now spread to lower-end bouquets. The rise of global streaming services (Netflix, Disney+, etc.) and social media consumption has fundamentally changed how people watch video content.

"The past two financial years have been a period of significant financial disruption for economies, corporates, and consumers across sub-Saharan Africa," MultiChoice stated. Consumers are tightening their belts, and Pay-TV is often the first expense to go.

Operational challenges are compounded by the rampant rise of piracy, where users access content illegally without paying subscriptions.

The Canal+ Turnaround Strategy

Canal+ CEO Maxime Saada has unveiled a three-pillar plan to save the company.

The focus is on reinvesting in subscriber acquisition to capture the "underpenetrated" African Pay-TV market. Canal+ has set ambitious targets with a "no small market" philosophy, incentivizing teams to push for growth in every territory.

Unlike previous cuts aimed at short-term profit, Canal+ plans to "reset the cost base" for a sustainable business model. This involves a granular focus on optimal distribution and efficiency.

The new owners aim to merge strengths. This includes reducing content and technology costs by sharing resources and strengthening the content lineup across platforms to enhance the customer value proposition.

The Road Ahead

A Critical Juncture

While former CEO Calvo Mawela highlighted milestones like the Showmax partnership with Comcast and investments in KingMakers, the financial reality tells a different story. The drop in numbers is a "serious concern" to Canal+.

The success of this turnaround depends on whether the new owners can execute their strategy of synergy and aggressive acquisition before the subscriber base erodes further.
