Bishop Nyamakanga Calls for a 'Congregants Council' - "Who Protects the Child of the Church?"

In a fiery and candid interview with Uncle Saint, Bishop Kevin Nyamakanga has called for a radical overhaul of how the Zimbabwean church handles disputes, suggesting that current bodies protect leaders at the expense of their followers.

The Baba Chirenje Intervention

The conversation centered around the case of Baba Chirenje, a congregant who faced severe hardships, including losing his home. Uncle Saint and Bishop Nyamakanga were instrumental in mobilizing resources to assist him.

Bishop Nyamakanga expressed disappointment that Chirenje's own spiritual fathers were notably absent during his time of crisis. "There were people who could have easily helped him with their own money," the Bishop noted, "but they said 'no, let Chirenje sleep outside.' It took ordinary Zimbabweans to step in."

"We saw pastors, bishops, and prophets ignoring the situation. It is the heart of the ordinary person that carried the burden."

"Thou Shall Not Touch the Anointed?"

The Bishop criticized the culture of immunity surrounding church leaders. He argued that scriptures like "touch not the anointed" are often twisted to silence victims of abuse and financial manipulation within the church.

"Just because you are a man of God does not mean you don't sin," Nyamakanga stated passionately. He referenced the biblical King David, noting that when David sinned, he faced consequences and made amends. "Today's leaders want to be called mighty men of God, but they refuse correction or discipline."

Uncle Saint shared harrowing stories of congregants approaching him with complaints about pastors who borrowed money and refused to pay back, or demanded inappropriate favors. The Bishop emphasized that these "so-called men of God" must be held accountable, just like doctors or lawyers who lose their licenses for malpractice.

A Radical Proposal: The Congregants Council

In a bold move, Bishop Nyamakanga proposed the formation of a new organization designed specifically to protect church members. He pointed out that existing bodies like the Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) and the Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe (EFZ) largely serve the interests of the leadership structures.

The Proposal: "Why can't we start an organization—call it the Zimbabwe Congregants Council—where a child of the church who has been wronged by a Bishop can come and report? We call that Bishop for a hearing. If they refuse, we approach the government to close that church."

Redefining the "Blessing"

Concluding the interview, the Bishop offered a profound theological take on what constitutes a blessing. He argued that true blessings are not merely material wealth like cars or houses, but the state of one's life and family.

"Seeing my kids go to school every day and excel, having good health... that alone is a blessing," he said. He used the analogy of King David pouring out water obtained at great risk to his men, emphasizing that leaders should sacrifice for their people, not drain them.

"We give not to be blessed, but because we are already blessed. The act of giving is the manifestation of the blessing that is already inside you."
