Mellisa Tafadzwa Makwasha: Zimpraise’s Angelic Voice and the Lobola That Broke the Internet
Mellisa Makwasha, a multifaceted gem in Zimbabwe's entertainment industry, gets candid with Star FM's V Candy. From her early days in the FIF church to leading Zimpraise and the viral success of "Mai Advisor," she shares her journey of faith, fame, and family.
Born into Worship
Born into a strong Christian family, Mellisa is the third born daughter in a family of four (three girls and a boy). Her parents, Hilary and Anatoria Makwasha, are Pastors in the Forward in Faith (FIF) ministries.
This environment nurtured her gift early on. Her musical talent was realized at the tender age of 4, and by 12, she was already ministering in the worship team. Despite the stigma of rebellion often attached to "PKs" (Pastor's Kids), Mellisa says she never gave up on God, staying true to her foundation.
The Lead Singer
At the age of 18, she joined the renowned Zimpraise Choir, marking the true beginning of her professional career. As the lead singer, she has had the privilege of ministering on world tours.
Beyond the stage, she serves as the Director for Zimpraise Kids, channeling her huge passion for leading the next generation of worshippers to find their voice and thrive in the House of God.
Having worked as a backing vocalist for many of Zimbabwe’s renowned Gospel artists, Mellisa launched her solo career in 2020. She released her debut album titled Munondichengeta.
The album's hit song, “Shamwari yangu,” topped charts on various Zimbabwean radio stations. She is currently working on her next major music project.
The "Mother Advisor" Phenomenon
In 2020, when the world was brought to a halt by the pandemic, another of Mellisa’s special gifts was birthed. She discovered her talent in acting through a character named Mai Advisor (or Mother Advisor).
The character mimics a female church leader responsible for advising young adult girls on life matters. It started as fun but exploded into a brand that has led to opportunities in advertising, modeling, MCing, and motivational speaking.
Joseph Madziyire & The $16k Lobola
Mellisa Makwasha is married to Joseph Madziyire. The couple managed to keep their relationship private for nearly six years before making it official.
They held their Lobola ceremony on 9 October 2021. In a testament to his commitment, relatives who attended allege that Joseph was charged US$16,000 for lobola—and he paid it all to the last cent.
Mellisa continues to shine as a multifaceted gem, touching lives through praise and worship and advising young ladies into the right path. In all her success as a singer, songwriter, actress, and entrepreneur, she believes all the glory belongs to God.
