Mellisa Makwasha: The Voice, The Comedy & The "Lobola of the Year"
From the disciplined life of a Pastor's Kid to the viral fame of "Mai Advisor," Mellisa Makwasha opens up to Star FM's V Candy about her Zimpraise journey, finding love, and why she kept her relationship secret for six years.
Growing Up as a Pastor's Kid
Being a "PK" (Pastor's Kid) often comes with a stigma of rebellion, but Mellisa Makwasha clears the air. Moving from Murambinda to Harare, Masvingo, Bulawayo, and Marondera due to her parents' ministry, she admits she hasn't been perfect but never abandoned her faith.
"I’ve made mistakes, I’ve sinned, but I’ve never got to a point where I gave up on God. I’ve always served in church all my life. Not perfect, but always there."
Mellisa highlights the unfair expectations placed on pastor's children. She recalls instances where church leaders questioned why she wasn't at prayer meetings while doing homework, simply because of her title.
"People expect you to be the pastor too. It's ridiculous. But thank God for the strength, we managed to stick around. I’ve just lived my life; take it or leave it."
The Musical Career
In 2011, a friend invited Mellisa to join Zimpraise. Initially viewing it as a fun pastime, she missed the first live recording to attend a wedding—a decision she regretted immediately upon seeing the production quality.
"I was in the audience, heartbroken. I saw the lights, the sound, the music, and thought, 'I gave up on this for a wedding?' From that moment, I was all in. Zimpraise became my life."
Known for hitting high notes today, Mellisa revealed she actually started as an alto/tenor singer with a low voice. It took years of practice, prayer, and "cracking her voice" to develop the vocal range she has today.
She is currently the director of Zimpraise Kids, grooming the next generation of talent—an opportunity she wishes she had at their age.
The Accidental Comedian
Mellisa never planned to be a comedian. "Mai Advisor" was born out of COVID-19 lockdown boredom and TikTok experimentation. What started as skits imitating church characters exploded into a viral sensation.
"I still can't believe people call me a comedian. I don't think I'm funny! It was never a dream of mine, but the response was overwhelming."
The character has evolved beyond satire. Mellisa now receives DMs from people seeking genuine life advice, finding comfort in the relatable nature of her content.
"It’s not just comedy anymore; it’s the testimonies. People come with sensitive issues. It is so fulfilling."
Love, Secrecy & "Lobola of the Year"
Mellisa stunned fans when she announced her Lobola (traditional marriage) in late 2021, dubbed "Lobola of the Year." She revealed she had been dating her partner, Joseph, for nearly six years without posting about it on social media.
"We protected the relationship. People aren't always nice on social media... 'it will end in tears.' I felt the one at a disadvantage would be me if it didn't work out. It was a mutual decision to keep it offline."
Despite her husband not being from her church (ZAOGA/FIF), he respected the traditions. He had to approach the church leadership to express his intentions before officially courting her.
"It protects the girl child very much. Even if it doesn't work out, the breakup is handled differently than on the streets. He was humble enough to go to the leaders."
With Lobola concluded, Mellisa confirmed that the white wedding is definitely happening in 2022, though the guest list remains a challenge due to her large circle of friends and family.
