The Sound of a Generation

Often called the "Phil Collins of Zimbabwe," Chimombe was celebrated for his unique sound, which masterfully fused Kenyan, South African, and Congolese rhythms with American Country and Western influences. His soulful voice and touching lyrics created a string of iconic hits, including "Jemedza," "Munakandafa," "Kudakwashe," and "Muchiti Mugere," that have stood the test of time.

Like many artists of his era, Chimombe's career was a journey. He moved through a series of legendary bands in search of his fortune, leaving his mark on the Pop Settlers Acid Band, The Blacks Unlimited, the Ocean City Band, Huchi Band, and the OK Success. He passed away at the absolute peak of his career, but his music remains as captivating as ever.

A Cherished Family Legacy

His son, Davitah Chimombe, remembers him not just as a musician, but as a dedicated family man. "My late father was not only a talented musician but also a devoted father who preached through his music," Davitah shared. "He took great pride in his family and he cared for all of his seven children until his death. As a family, we will always miss him."

The musical torch is carried on by his children, including Davitah and his sister, Tendai. Davitah has just released an album dedicated to his father and is planning tribute shows in South Africa. He speaks with immense pride of his sister's accomplishments: "My sister Tendai has more experience in the industry than I do... To say she has mastered the craft would be an understatement... She is also a respected music teacher and mentor, just like our father."

Remembered by a Friend

Veteran saxophonist Philip Svosve, who worked closely with Chimombe, fondly recalls their deep connection. "I was not only a good friend to Jimmy but also his uncle, which has strengthened our bond beyond that of mere band members," Svosve said. "I will always remember him for the good memories we shared." Svosve has pledged to help nurture the next generation, stating, "Culturally, he is our son, and we must nurture him to fulfil his father’s wishes. We want to see his legacy continue."
