The Enduring Legacy of Winky D - From Township Roots to Reggae Royalty

Wallace Chirumiko, better known by his stage name Winky D, is a cornerstone of Zimbabwean dancehall music. His journey, however, began far from the bright lights of international acclaim.

A Childhood Steeped in Music

Born on February 1, 1983, in Harare's Kambuzuma township, Winky D's early life was a world away from the stardom that awaited him. While he readily admits to a touch of youthful exuberance in conversation with Trevor Ncube, music remained a constant thread throughout his formative years.

The influence of his father, a renowned mbira player, undoubtedly fostered a love for music within the family. This passion was further nurtured by his younger brother, Layaan, who now stands as a music producer and integral part of Vigilance Music, the company behind Winky D's musical endeavors.

Kambuzuma wasn't merely a place of residence; it served as Winky D's first classroom. The challenges and experiences of his humble beginnings would later prove invaluable, shaping him both as a musician and a man.

A Budding Talent Takes Flight

By the age of ten, Winky D's fascination with music, particularly reggae, had blossomed. Beenie Man and Bob Marley became his idols, their music finding a prominent place in his ever-growing collection of cassette tapes and vinyl records. This passion for music found a willing accomplice in his childhood friend, Jonathan Banda. Their bond, forged through their shared experience growing up as neighbors, transcended friendship and blossomed into a musical partnership.

During their high school years, they established Super Youth, a sound system outfit that enlivened music events, weddings, and parties. Winky D's talent for deejaying and emceeing began to shine through during this period.

This era also marked the birth of his stage name. Initially known as Wicked DJ, the moniker eventually morphed into the now-iconic Winky D.

From Schoolyard Sounds to International Recognition

Their high school journey eventually diverged, with Banda pursuing higher education. Winky D, however, remained firmly rooted in the music scene. Partnering with Gerry B, he formed Dark Child, another sound system outfit that carved a niche for itself in the burgeoning Zimbabwean dancehall scene.

The year 2004 marked a pivotal moment. Winky D launched his solo career with the release of "Ndiri Rasta," his debut single on the Luckspin Riddim. This release ignited a 20-year odyssey that would propel him to international stardom. Even Jamaica, the birthplace of dancehall, began to recognize his exceptional talent.

A defining moment arrived in 2017 when Winky D collaborated with his childhood idol, Beenie Man, on the track "My Woman." The lyrics, "Pachigaro chengoma handibve kusvika Beenie Man ati ndamushona" ("I never thought I'd reach the level where Beenie Man calls me a comrade"), perfectly encapsulated the remarkable journey of a young boy from Kambuzuma to a revered musical force.

The Anointed One: Music as a Mission

Winky D views his talent as an "anointing," a gift that elevates music from a career path to a calling. His music serves as a powerful tool for social commentary, a voice for those who are unheard. The key to his enduring success? A keen understanding of his audience's evolving needs, consistently delivering music that resonates deeply with them.

One aspect of Winky D that remains shrouded in secrecy is his personal life. Fiercely private, only a select few are privy to his inner circle. This loyalty extends to his family and friends, making them some of the most tight-lipped individuals around him. When it comes to Winky D, privacy is a sacred pact.

Winky D's story is a testament to resilience, dedication, and an unwavering passion for music. From the unassuming streets of Kambuzuma to international recognition, his journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring musicians everywhere.

It underscores the power of staying true to one's roots and embracing one's calling.
