The Rise of Freeman HKD - From Butcher Boy to Dancehall Doctor

From Football Fields to Recording Studios

Born in Bindura in 1988, Freeman's early life was a tapestry woven with diverse experiences. He honed his athletic skills on the football pitch, playing professionally for Mwana Africa FC. However, at age 18, he also got a job at an abattoir as a butcher boy. It was during this period that music, which pulsed strong within him, led him to record his first track, "Unondipa Rudo," in 2009 with the help of a friend, Nhubu Wemanuff.

Fate intervened in 2010 when Freeman met DJ Staera. This pivotal connection led him to Hillary Mutake of Punchline Entertainment, opening doors to public performances. It was during this period that the song that would propel him to national recognition, "Joina City," was released. The infectious melody and captivating lyrics resonated deeply with audiences, propelling Freeman to stardom and making him a household name.

A Prolific Hitmaker

Recognizing the potential within other aspiring artists, Freeman established HKD Records in 2012. This record label became a breeding ground for Zimdancehall talent, housing artists like Daruler, Delroy, and Maggikal. The name HKD stands for Hatimire Kusimbisa Dangerzone (We don’t stop pushing the danger zone movement), representing his musical family and clan.

Freeman's dedication has resulted in an impressive discography of nine studio albums. Tracks like "Shaina," "Doctor Weemagitare," and "Ngaibake" (featuring Alick Macheso) stand as testaments to his versatility. He has also actively collaborated with other top artists, including Winky D, Shinsoman, Lady Squanda, Chris Martin, Tamy Moyo, and Gemma Griffiths, creating a rich tapestry of sounds.

The Man Behind the Music

While his friends gave him the nickname "Freeman" in high school, it was his fans who dubbed him the "Dancehall Doctor." This alter ego speaks to his expertise and his ability to "heal" through music, bringing people together. His creative process is flexible; sometimes he is inspired in the studio and records without writing, while other times he writes lyrics down before recording.

Freeman believes deeply in collaboration, citing the Shona proverb, “Rume rimwe harikombe churu” (No man is an island). He credits local pioneers like The Decibels for paving the way and showing Zimbabwean artists how to build a business. From watching international stars like Movado and Capleton, he learned that by investing in local sound and staying true to their artform, Zimdancehall has the potential to be known all over the world.

Legacy and Personal Life

Freeman's impact has been widely recognized. He has garnered numerous prestigious awards, including multiple Zimdancehall Awards for Best Male Artist and Best Album. In 2023, he swept the Zimbabwe Music Awards (ZIMA) for Song of the Year, Best Male Artist, and Album of the Year, solidifying his position at the pinnacle of Zimdancehall.

In 2012, Freeman married his wife, Barbra Chinhete, after dating for six years. He emphasizes that family comes first before anything else and that his job is to entertain with his music, not his private life. Beyond music, he is a brand ambassador for several brands and sells merchandise online and at his gigs.
