Wicknell Chivayo Granted Provincial Hero Status As Families Agree On Joint Burial With Wife Lucy
Following his tragic death in a helicopter crash, the late Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo has been officially granted Provincial Hero status by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The announcement of the hero status was made on Friday, 2 October 2026, as relatives, business associates, and church members converged on the family's Borrowdale homestead in Harare to pay their respects to the prominent philanthropist and his wife.
Conferred By The President
According to ZBC News, the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, Tino Machakaire, announced that President Emmerson Mnangagwa had officially conferred Provincial Hero status on the late businessman.
Minister Machakaire has been among the most prominent officials publicly mourning Chivayo since the news of the crash broke. In a deeply personal condolence message, he described the incident as a devastating loss for the nation.
The Provincial Hero status formally cements Chivayo's legacy within the official state records, recognizing a public profile that heavily intertwined his vast commercial interests with widespread philanthropic and political funding.
Together in Final Rest
Amidst the formalities of state honours, a deeply personal decision was reached behind the scenes. The families of Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, have agreed for the couple to be laid to rest at the same cemetery.
The development was confirmed by family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo. Speaking to ZBC, he revealed that the family had received explicit approval from Lucy’s relatives for her to be buried alongside her husband.
The exact burial dates and specific funeral arrangements are still being finalized and are expected to be communicated by the family in the coming days.
The Marondera Helicopter Crash
The couple were among five people who died when their helicopter catastrophically crashed at Kudenga Farm near Marondera on Wednesday evening, 30 September 2026.
Alongside Wicknell and Lucy, the crash claimed the lives of security aide Senelisiwe Magagula, pilot Captain Kelvin T. Soda, and co-pilot Captain Courage Mutavirwa.
Summary: A Legacy Cemented
The conferring of Provincial Hero status by President Emmerson Mnangagwa represents a major official acknowledgement of Wicknell Chivayo's impact on Zimbabwe. While often a lightning rod for public debate due to his immense wealth and extravagant lifestyle, his extensive—and highly publicized—donations to churches, musicians, ordinary citizens, and the ruling party have clearly left an indelible mark on the national consciousness.
As investigations into the tragic helicopter crash continue, the focus now shifts to Borrowdale, where two families have come together in grief. The agreement to bury Wicknell and Lucy side-by-side ensures that the couple, who were seemingly inseparable in life, will remain united in their final rest.
