Wicknell Chivayo’s Final Journey: Harare CBD Stops as Luxury Cars and Bikers Escort His Remains Home
Written By: H-Metro Reporters | Published: October 8, 2026 | 3 min read
Harare’s Central Business District ground to a halt yesterday as the remains of flamboyant businessman and philanthropist Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, were taken from Doves Funeral Services to their Gletwyn home.
The funeral procession, featuring Rolls-Royces, Mercedes-Benz vehicles and a convoy of bikers, attracted widespread attention as mourners gathered to bid farewell to the couple in a manner that mirrored the businessman’s larger-than-life persona.
A City Stands Still
To accommodate the massive convoy, police took the unprecedented step of closing Kwame Nkrumah Avenue and Harare Street to general traffic. As the hearses slowly made their way out of the funeral parlour, public onlookers waved and shouted their final goodbyes, with many capturing the dramatic moment on their mobile phones from the pavements and nearby building balconies.
A Flamboyant Farewell
True to Wicknell Chivayo's well-documented love for high-end luxury vehicles, the transportation of their remains was deeply personalized. Two stark white, custom-fitted caskets stood out among the convoy, reflecting his unique brand of flamboyance.
Faith and Modified Traditions
At the chapel, members of the Johane Masowe WeChishanu Apostolic sect took complete charge of the funeral proceedings, led by Madzibaba Lawrence Katsiru and Madzibaba Stanley Kazingizi.
Doctrinal Adjustments
Madzibaba Stanley confirmed the couple would be buried according to the sect’s religious traditions, thanking the family for allowing the church to fulfil its obligations for Madzibaba Wicknell and Madzimai Lulu.
While the sect normally buries its members without coffins, a tragic exception was made. “Because their bodies were crushed into pieces [in the crash], that alone has pushed us to lift some of our cultural traditions and use caskets,” explained Madzibaba Stanley.
Final Arrival at Gletwyn
Madzibaba Stanley shared personal memories, noting Chivayo's intense work ethic: “We reached a point where we met daily, teaching each other the ways of life. We even had breakfast together at his residence.”
The procession arrived at the Gletwyn family home amid light rain showers. The media was subsequently barred from recording the inner proceedings as the sect took exclusive charge of the final religious rites.
A Fitting, Flamboyant Send-Off
Wicknell Chivayo lived his life loudly, unapologetically, and surrounded by luxury. It is only fitting that his final journey through the streets of Harare reflected the exact magnitude of the persona he projected while alive.
From the roaring biker escorts to the bespoke Rolls-Royce and Mercedes-Benz caskets, the procession was a masterclass in flamboyant farewells. Yet, grounded by the traditional rites of his Apostolic faith, the event struck a profound balance between immense public spectacle and deeply private spiritual mourning.
