“I Was Paid In Full”: Thomas Mapfumo Confirms US$1 Million Wicknell Chivayo Deal Was Paid In Full Amid Tragic Crash!
Chimurenga music legend Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo has confirmed that he was paid his performance fees in full as part of a blockbuster US$1 million deal engineered by the late businessman Wicknell Chivayo. Despite the tragic helicopter crash that claimed his benefactor's life, Mukanya remains fully committed to honouring the contract.
Mapfumo was brought back into the country by Chivayo after years abroad to perform at two high-profile events: Jah Prayzah's wedding in Victoria Falls, and a massive housewarming and birthday celebration for Chivayo at his rural home in Gandami, Chivhu.
Honouring The Contract
Speaking to H-Metro, an emotional Mukanya revealed he is still in shock after receiving the tragic news of Wicknell Chivayo’s death, but he moved quickly to clarify the status of their massive business arrangement.
Mapfumo was scheduled to perform at Jah Prayzah’s wedding on Saturday, October 3. Following that event, a massive housewarming party doubling as Chivayo’s birthday celebrations had been slated for later this month at Chivayo's Gandami rural home.
Mourning The Crash Victims
In addition to his personal comments, Chimurenga Music Company and The Blacks Unlimited issued a formal statement expressing their deepest condolences following the Wednesday helicopter crash that claimed five lives.
“Thomas Mapfumo and The Blacks Unlimited would like to express our deepest sympathies for the passing of Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, along with Senelisiwe Magagula, Kelvin Soda and Courage Mutavirwa.
Our deepest condolences go to the Chivayo family, their children, relatives, friends, and all those who knew and loved them, as well as the families of the mentioned victims.”
The veteran musician closed the tribute with a prayer for peace: “May God give the Chivayo family strength and comfort during this incredibly difficult time. May the souls of Wicknell, Lucy, and all those who perished rest in eternal peace.”
Postponed Plans & Next Steps
The sudden tragedy has severely disrupted Mapfumo’s Zimbabwe engagements. Consequently, Jah Prayzah and his management (under Mr. Mukombe) have indefinitely postponed the wedding ceremony to allow time to mourn their benefactor and friend.
Mapfumo indicated he would return to his base in the United States while the dust settles, assuring fans and stakeholders that he will be back when the time is right.
The official statement from Mapfumo's team formalized this commitment: "As formally communicated with Mr Mukombe’s management team, Chimurenga Music Company remains fully committed to fulfilling its obligation to perform at Mr and Mrs Mukombe’s wedding celebrations once the new date has been confirmed."
Professionalism Amidst Tragedy
Thomas Mapfumo’s return to Zimbabwe was supposed to be a historic celebration of music, wealth, and reunion, fully funded by Wicknell Chivayo's staggering US$1 million contract. Now, the events are blanketed in mourning following the tragic September 30 helicopter crash.
By stepping forward immediately to confirm that he was paid in full and publicly vowing to fulfill his contractual obligations, Mapfumo has demonstrated immense professionalism during an incredibly chaotic and heartbreaking time. While fans will have to wait longer for the highly anticipated performances, the Chimurenga legend has made it clear: the shows will go on, in due time, in honour of the man who made them possible.
