Widespread Trail of Destruction

Families across Masvingo are picking up the pieces after the sudden Monday evening weather system left severe structural damage in its wake.

ESTIMATED TOLL 13,000+ Households

Extensive damage reported, including lost roofs, shattered windows, and destroyed personal property.

Uprooted Trees and Infrastructure

“We never expected a storm of this magnitude. The strong winds and hailstones caused serious damage, with trees uprooted and some structures affected. Many people have lost property, and repairing the damage will require a lot of resources,” a Masvingo resident said.

Sudden Devastation

Another resident described the storm as sudden and destructive: “The storm came suddenly and left a trail of destruction. Roofs were damaged, windows were shattered and a lot of our property was destroyed.”

Schools and University Facilities Suffer Damage

The storm also disrupted schools and other educational institutions across Masvingo, forcing significant changes to academic schedules and major events.

Ndarama High School

Ndarama High School suffered damage to buildings, facilities and other school property, halting normal learning activities. “The hailstorm also caused significant damage here at Ndarama High, school property and infrastructure. Some facilities were affected, and this has disrupted normal learning activities,” said Head of Ndarama High School, Mr Oddy Matongo.

Government Assesses Damage as Assistance Mobilises

On Tuesday afternoon, provincial officials visited several areas affected by the storm. Government and its partners are actively working to mobilise emergency resources for the displaced.

Provincial Leadership on the Ground

Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Honourable Ezra Chadzamira led the assessment, joined by Masvingo Mayor Councillor Alec Tabe. “The damage caused by this hailstorm is quite extensive, and as the city authorities we are concerned about the impact on our residents and infrastructure,” Councillor Tabe noted.

Honourable Chadzamira added: “We have come out to assess the extent of the damage... From what we have seen, a number of families, businesses, schools, infrastructure and utilities have been affected.”

Civil Protection Department Activation

The Civil Protection Department continues assessing the affected areas. The immediate focus remains on supporting families and damaged institutions.

Mucheke Hall Evacuation Centre

Authorities have made Mucheke Hall available as an evacuation centre. Affected families can use the facility while officials coordinate assistance.

Sona News Analysis

A Monumental Reconstruction Effort

With more than 13,000 households reporting damage, the sheer scale of the disaster is overwhelming for a single city. Beyond immediate shelter at Mucheke Hall, providing roofing materials, window replacements, and food security for this many families will require massive, coordinated national and provincial funding.

Academic Setbacks at Critical Times

The disruption hits the education sector hard. From high schools like Ndarama struggling to maintain normal learning hours, to Great Zimbabwe University being forced to delay its graduation ceremony until October 23, the socio-economic and administrative ripple effects of this single storm will be felt for weeks.

Climate Vulnerability

The suddenness and severity of the hailstorm highlight growing vulnerabilities to extreme weather events. The statements from residents about having "little time to prepare" point to a need for more robust early warning systems to protect property and lives before such weather systems strike.
