Kurai revealed that beyond the stage, he holds significant traditional responsibilities. He is officially "Sabhuku Makore" (Village Head) in the Guruve area. He inherited the title following the passing of his father in 2014, though he officially took up the duties in 2018 after returning from a long stint living in the United States.

A Massive Family Dynamic Kurai comes from a massive family line, revealing during the podcast that his late father had 38 children. He hinted that this complex dynamic plays a massive role in the lack of unity and support he currently feels from his relatives.

The "Cease and Desist" Controversy

The core of the interview centered on the explosive fallout between Kurai and Mapfumo’s management. Recently, Cuthbert Chiromo (Mapfumo's manager) issued a public warning and a cease and desist order against Kurai, labeling him a "cheat" and an "arrogant copyright robber" for allegedly exploiting the Mapfumo brand.

When asked about this, Kurai did not mince his words. He acknowledged the friction but vehemently denied trying to steal his uncle's identity.

"I am Kurai Makore, Not Kurai Mapfumo" Kurai explained that the confusion often stems from eager event promoters rather than his own marketing. He cited an incident where promoters falsely printed posters reading 'Kurai Mapfumo.' “I told them no, change that. I am Kurai Makore. People will judge you based on what they see, but I control my life. If a promoter makes a mistake, I correct it.”

The Ban: Forbidden from Singing Mukanya’s Hits

The most significant point of conflict has been Kurai’s performance of Thomas Mapfumo’s classic hits during live shows. Kurai defended his actions, arguing that he is a professional musician with his own extensive catalog (three albums containing over 20 original songs), but as a live performer, he must respond to the crowd.

"When you go to a show, fans request songs. If they ask for 'Bhutsu Mutandarika' or 'Chamunorwa,' you play it. Any band can play cover songs. Why is it a crime when I do it?" Kurai asked. "If someone else plays his songs, it's fine, but because I am his nephew, it becomes an issue."

The Painful Reality Kurai revealed that his uncle has explicitly forbidden him from using his name or singing his songs. "He [Mapfumo] said it himself... There is no support... everyone just wants to fight."

Stepping Out of the Shadow: The Rebrand

Exhausted by the drama, Kurai announces a definitive pivot to claim his own legacy.

Realizing that the constant association with the Mapfumo brand is causing more harm than good, Kurai announced a major change during the podcast. To put an end to the disputes and the accusations of riding on his uncle's coattails, he is officially rebranding his image and name.

Forging a New Path “Going forward, I want people to know me as Kurai Rongai Makore. That is my name. I want to build my own legacy. I am not fighting for the 'heir' title. Let those who want to fight over it, fight.”

Despite the public humiliation of the cease and desist orders and the family rejection, Kurai maintains he harbors no ill will. "I love him so much. I wish he would come to my shows," he added.
