“His Bedroom Was Like An Abattoir”: Friend Speaks Out at Dr. Muduva’s Burial as US$2,000 ‘Cheating Fine’ is Revealed
While Lyliosa Chirara was laid to rest at her family home in Hwedza on Saturday, the Muduva family gathered in Murambinda, Buhera, on Sunday to bury the 42-year-old academic and human rights commissioner. The atmosphere was incredibly tense, darkened further by the arrival of the couple's three orphaned children directly from their mother's funeral, and the conspicuous presence of the "other woman," Patience Mangwiro.
However, it was the graveside speeches that truly captivated the crowd. Friends and family took to the podium to set the record straight against the backdrop of viral suicide notes and social media gossip, exposing a deeply flawed "counseling" process, a secret cash settlement, and a passionate plea regarding male victims of gender-based violence (GBV).
"The Situation Was Like An Abattoir"
Taking to the podium, a close friend of the late Dr. Muduva felt compelled to address the "false information" circulating online regarding the murder. According to his account, Lyliosa had not been blindsided by the new marriage, but had actively turned to violence after a change of heart.
He revealed that Lyliosa was officially informed by her husband of his intentions to marry Patience Mangwiro, and that the marriage was conducted according to traditional customs. “Lyliosa later changed her mind and started not to accept Mangwiro. She then decided to kill her husband,” he stated.
The US$2,000 "Cheating Fine"
Misheck Muduva, a family member who had actually accompanied the late Commissioner to pay lobola for Patience Mangwiro, provided critical context to the couple's final days. He stated that the family had conducted several counseling sessions with Lyliosa and her two sisters present, where she initially accepted the polygamous arrangement.
Misheck also addressed the viral suicide note left by Lyliosa, acknowledging that she explicitly blamed him for ruining her marriage by supporting Martin's decision to take a second wife. Noticeably, none of Lyliosa’s family members were present to deliver a graveside speech at the Buhera burial.
"If a Woman Was Axed... They Wouldn't Be Quiet"
While Patience Mangwiro, the second wife at the center of the fatal love triangle, sat among the mourners, the late doctor's friend passionately argued that Dr. Muduva had suffered in silence at the hands of a toxic, abusive spouse long before the axe fell.
His speech struck a chord, highlighting how society often struggles to view successful, highly educated men as victims of severe domestic abuse.
Money Cannot Buy Peace
The graveside revelations in Buhera provide the final, tragic puzzle pieces to the Dzivarasekwa murder-suicide. The attempt to appease a deeply scorned and psychologically breaking wife with a US$2,000 "token" for cheating, masked as traditional counseling, proved fatally inadequate.
What these speeches confirm is that this was not a spontaneous crime of passion, but a slow-motion trainwreck. Lyliosa Chirara did not accept the new marriage; she resented the financial payoffs, she resented the "counselors" like Misheck who facilitated the betrayal, and ultimately, she turned their home into an "abattoir." While we must absolutely acknowledge that men are often silent victims of GBV—and Lyliosa's brutal actions are inexcusable murder—this tragedy proves that patriarchal attempts to force a woman to accept a co-wife through "counseling and tokens" can trigger catastrophic, deadly consequences.
