‘Gudo Guru Peta Muswe’: The Bitter Mapfumo Family War Over the Soul of Chimurenga Music
There is a Shona saying that feels particularly appropriate to the increasingly uncomfortable public dispute surrounding legendary musician Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo and his nephew, Kurai Makore: “Gudo guru peta muswe.” The bigger and older the baboon, the greater the expectation that it should know when to tuck in its tail.
Mapfumo is unquestionably one of Zimbabwe’s greatest musicians. His contribution to the development, popularisation, and international recognition of Chimurenga music is monumental. But respecting a legend does not require surrendering our critical faculties. The most important distinction in this entire controversy is this: Thomas Mapfumo can own Thomas Mapfumo’s songs. He cannot own Chimurenga.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Chimurenga Music Company issued a cease-and-desist letter to Kurai Makore to prevent him from performing Mapfumo's copyrighted songs. Management labeled Makore a "copyright robber" who was illegally profiting off his uncle's legacy.
The company is managed by Cuthbert Chiromo, who claims to have secured the rights in 1998. However, Mapfumo's daughter, Chiedza, asserts the family is driving the effort to protect the catalog's digital and licensing revenues.
Yes. Between 2023 and early 2025, it was widely reported that Makore had his uncle's explicit blessing to perform the music to help "preserve the legacy," making the sudden legal action appear highly inconsistent.
Protect the Songs, Not the Sky
If Kurai Makore is performing copyrighted Thomas Mapfumo compositions without permission where permission is legally required, that issue must be resolved. If promoters are falsely advertising Kurai as an officially appointed successor, correct them. But do not appear to confuse ownership of your songs with ownership of the river from which everybody drinks. Chimurenga is bigger than Thomas Mapfumo.
The true measure of Mapfumo’s greatness is that the musical language he helped shape has become strong enough to outlive him and inspire the next generation. A great teacher does not fear the student becoming excellent. To Mukanya, the message is simple: Gudo guru, petai muswe. Nobody can take Hokoyo or Corruption away from you. Protect what legally belongs to you, but resolve this family dispute privately as a family. Bless the next generation where blessing is deserved, and let Kurai Makore evolve the genre.
