‘No Pressure, Just Opportunity’: 20-Year-Old Atenda Chinx Makes History, Leads Late Father’s Band at 2026 Heroes Gala

For decades, the soaring, revolutionary vocals of Cde Dick Chingaira—affectionately known to the nation as Comrade Chinx—provided the ultimate soundtrack to Zimbabwe's national gatherings. Following his passing, a profound silence hovered over his legendary group, the Barrel of Peace. That is, until now.

PASSING THE TORCH: 20-year-old rising Afro-beat star Atenda Chingaira is officially taking the mantle, leading her late father’s legendary band into a new era.

Rising Afro-beat songbird Atenda Chingaira (Atenda Chinx) is making history. At just 20 years old, she has stepped into her father's monumental shoes, officially taking over the frontline of the Barrel of Peace. Next week, she will represent her family on one of the country's most revered stages: the 2026 National Heroes Gala in Mhondoro.

Embracing A Giant's Shadow

Carrying the name of a national music icon can crush a young artist under the weight of public expectation. But for Atenda, the journey is about exploration, not pressure.

Atenda, who turns 21 in November, recently proved her undeniable stage presence and versatility at the ‘Daughters of Legends’ event organized by Selmor Mtukudzi, where she was solidly backed by The Barrel of Peace Band.

Nurturing the Craft When asked about the immense pressure of being Comrade Chinx's daughter, Atenda was surprisingly grounded: “I wouldn’t call it pressure, but rather an opportunity that was handed down to me. The only thing that I have to do is work harder at nurturing my craft.”
Building on the Foundation She remains fiercely dedicated to preserving the liberation hero’s artistic legacy. “My dad created the path for me, and all I have to do is learn from what he did and build from there. He set a beautiful foundation, which we are building upon.”

A Star-Studded Gala Billing

Atenda will not be alone. Organizers have assembled a top-drawer, multi-genre army of Zimbabwe’s finest musical stars to set the Chemhanza Grounds alight.

Sungura & Jiti Heavyweights The lineup promises relentless energy with Jiti maestro Baba Harare, alongside Sungura titans Peter "Young Igwe" Moyo, Simon Mutambi, Mark Ngwazi, Romeo Gasa, Clement Magwaza, and Bio Mudimba bringing their signature spark to the province.
Traditional, Gospel & Liberation Mbira is well represented by Sasha Amadhuve and Andy Muridzo. Mutare’s finest gospel divas, Dorcas Moyo and Agatha Murudzwa, are confirmed. Revolutionary singer Chief Hwenje will also grace the stage alongside the acclaimed LMG Choir.
Zimdancehall & Hip-Hop Ensuring the younger generation stays on their feet, energetic chanter Jah Master will deliver his Zimdancehall hits, while Bulawayo’s pride, rapper Mzoe 7, brings urban flair to the national event.

Bringing the Gala to Mhondoro

For the very first time, the massive, state-funded entertainment extravaganza is bypassing the traditional urban hubs in favor of grassroots accessibility.

Leaving No One Behind Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services deputy director Hymn Mureru stated: “This is the first time Mhondoro will host such an event in line with President Mnangagwa’s mantra of leaving no place and no one behind.”
A Free Mega-Event Scheduled for August 11, the event will allow people from Mhondoro and surrounding rural areas to enjoy performances by the country’s biggest musical stars without having to travel long distances to Harare or Bulawayo. Entry is completely free.
