A NATION WAITS: The man who has spent nearly two decades rescuing Zimbabweans from treacherous waters now finds himself fighting for his own recovery following a brutal collision with a commuter omnibus.

The accident occurred as Coach Rambo was riding his motorbike towards Harare when a commuter omnibus allegedly veered into his lane. The severe impact threw the well-known rescue diver from his bike. Witnesses immediately alerted emergency services, and he was rushed to a medical facility for urgent treatment. For a man whose entire legacy is built on saving others from the brink of tragedy, the cruel irony of the crash has left supporters and the wider public deeply concerned.

The Collision in Norton

Eyewitness accounts paint a grim picture of the collision, as investigations commence to determine the exact circumstances that led to the crash.

What we know about the Saturday incident:

The Commuter Omnibus According to reports, Coach Rambo was navigating towards the capital when a commuter omnibus unexpectedly veered into his path. The violent collision forcefully ejected him from his motorbike, leaving him with serious injuries on the tarmac.
Awaiting Official Updates While witnesses rushed to assist and he was quickly transported to a Norton medical facility, neither the Zimbabwe Republic Police nor hospital officials have released an official statement on the full extent of his injuries. The public continues to await updates, wishing him a rapid recovery.

Not a Hollywood Script: The Real Rambo

While the cinematic John Rambo fought enemy soldiers on the big screen, Victor Kazembe's battlefield has always been water.

18 Years of Lifesaving For nearly two decades, the 38-year-old has dedicated his life to saving others. Since 2008, he estimates that he has rescued or recovered more than 90 people from rivers, dams, and flooded areas across Zimbabwe.
The Epworth Pool of Death His courage is legendary. Coach Rambo regularly dives into environments most would deem suicidal. He has retrieved at least 11 bodies from the notorious Epworth Pool of Death and began his training at the infamous Kambuzuma Pool of Death.
Trained for the Impossible Kazembe is not an amateur. He earned his Zimbabwe Bronze Life Saving Certificate in 2012 and later underwent specialized scuba diving training. This allows him to operate beneath the water for extended periods in zero-visibility conditions.

The Budiriro 3 Sewage Tragedy

Just recently, Coach Rambo faced one of the most horrifying assignments of his career, diving into a toxic sewage pit to recover victims that emergency services struggled to reach.

A Search Multiplied What began as a search for a single victim who had fallen into a sewage-filled pit in Budiriro 3 ended with the shocking recovery of three bodies. “The conditions were extremely difficult because this was not ordinary water. It was sewage and thick mud,” Kazembe recalled.
Trapped Gases and Fear Visibility was non-existent, and trapped gases made breathing incredibly difficult. After retrieving the first two bodies, exhaustion and terror set in. “My legs started shaking — not from the cold, but from fear,” he admitted.
A Near-Fatal Third Dive On his third attempt to retrieve the final victim, the sludge was so thick he could not walk. Operating for three minutes without his mouthpiece, he found the young man. As the fire department hoisted him up, he turned upside down in the sludge. “I just looked to the skies and thanked God for protecting me,” he said.
SONA EDITORIAL VERDICT

A Nation Owes Its Hero

When disaster strikes on the water, the script is rarely clean. There are no special effects, no stunt doubles, and no second takes. For 18 years, Victor "Coach Rambo" Kazembe has willingly thrown himself into darkness, sludge, and despair to bring closure and salvation to grieving families across Zimbabwe.

Now, the man who has spent a lifetime rescuing others is the one in need of rescue. His horrific motorcycle crash in Norton is a devastating blow to a community that has heavily relied on his selfless bravery. While the exact details of the collision remain under investigation, the immediate focus of the nation must be on his recovery. Zimbabwe does not have many real-life action heroes, but in Coach Rambo, we have one of the very best. We wish him a swift and complete healing.
