A Call to Action for Safe Water and Sanitation (African Union (AU) Theme of the Year 2026)

AFRICA AGENDA 2063

AU Theme of the Year 2026: A Call to Action for Safe Water and Sanitation

The Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), at its 39th Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, has officially adopted the theme for the year: “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”

African Union Theme of the Year 2026: Water and Sanitation
Driving Africa’s Development Agenda through sustainable water and sanitation.

As leaders and citizens rally together in the pursuit of a healthier and more prosperous Africa, the AU is prioritizing sustainable water systems to bring hope and opportunity to millions. This theme underscores that water is not just an environmental issue, but a critical engine for economic transformation and climate resilience.

"An Africa where there is an equitable and sustainable management of water resources for poverty alleviation, socio-economic development, regional cooperation and the environment."

— THE AFRICA WATER VISION 2026

Continental Priorities

The Africa Water Vision 2026

The adoption of the Africa Water Vision 2026 will foster a strategic framework towards inclusive and climate-resilient water security on the continent.

Key Focus Areas

The WEFE Nexus

Paving the way for integrated water resources management within the Water, Energy, Food and Ecosystems (WEFE) nexus framework. This ensures that water management is tied directly to agricultural and energy policies.

CAADP Integration

Recommitting to the principles of the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP), enhancing investment finance in agriculture, and promoting intra-African trade in agricultural commodities.

Transboundary Cooperation

Enhancing regional cooperation in managing transboundary water resources. Many of Africa's rivers and lakes cross national borders, necessitating collaborative approaches to ensure equitable solutions.

Urgent Challenges

Climate Change, Water Security & Health

As Africa continues to grapple with the impacts of climate change, including increased droughts and flooding, the need for sustainable water management has never been more urgent.

The Scale of the Crisis

Public Health Threat

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), waterborne diseases remain a leading cause of mortality in Africa. Up to 80% of ailments impacting the productivity of the labor force can be attributed to poor hygiene and sanitation.

Empowering Communities

The AU urges member states to engage local communities in planning and implementing water and sanitation projects. This participatory approach is vital for ensuring the sustainability of initiatives, particularly in rural and underserved urban areas.

Economic Transformation

A New Narrative on Water

The AU advocates for a new narrative that resonates with the expectations of the African citizenry—one that recognizes the full potential of water in socio-economic development.

Job Creation & Industrialization

Did you know that three out of four jobs are water-dependent? The new narrative fosters an appreciation of the vitality of water in economic growth and job creation. Elevating the business case for water will accelerate the pace of much-needed infrastructure investments.

Mitigating Climate Migration

Exacerbated by climate change, water scarcity is a major contributing factor to migration. Transitioning to a greener economy and securing water resources enhances opportunities for decent jobs, keeping communities stable and thriving.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The Solar Connection: Pumping Life into Africa

Water and Energy are Inseparable

The African Union's sharp focus on the Water, Energy, Food and Ecosystems (WEFE) nexus perfectly aligns with the realities on the ground in Zimbabwe and across the continent. You cannot achieve sustainable water availability without reliable energy to pump, purify, and distribute it. As the grid remains unstable across many regions, Solar Water Pumping Systems are the ultimate solution to realizing the AU's 2026 vision.

By integrating solar power into agricultural irrigation, rural boreholes, and urban water tanks, communities can bypass unreliable fossil fuels, combat climate change directly, and secure their water supply permanently.
