At least 18 people are feared dead after a South Africa-registered Toyota Quantum commuter omnibus exploded into a massive fireball along the Bulawayo–Beitbridge Road. The devastating incident has prompted a massive emergency response, pulling in the military, the police, and a specialized bomb squad.

Secure Your Power SupplyUnpacking the Tragedy
The force of the blast left the vehicle completely destroyed, creating a crater in the road.
Location and Time
The fatal incident occurred on Thursday, April 16, 2026, between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM near the Much Binding area, situated between Chipangali and the Gwanda tollgate (approximately 20km from Bulawayo).
The Force of the Blast
Witnesses described a "massive fireball" that engulfed the South Africa-registered Toyota Quantum within seconds. The sheer force of the explosion scattered debris and human remains over a 50-meter radius, with early reports indicating one victim's body was found nearly 100 meters away beyond dense roadside trees.
The presence of a bomb disposal unit suggests investigators are treating the scene with extreme caution.
Suspected Explosives
Preliminary information and the discovery of a crater suggest the kombi may have been transporting explosive materials. Military personnel and police have been seen combing the nearby bushland for bodies and evidence. Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe also arrived at the scene to coordinate the response.
Motorists face severe delays as the highway remains cordoned off for forensic work.
4-Hour Delays
The incident caused major disruptions along one of Zimbabwe’s busiest highways, with authorities warning motorists to expect delays of up to four hours on the Bulawayo-Esigodini road as emergency teams worked to contain flames that had spread to nearby grass.
Emergency Detour Carved
To ease the massive congestion while the area remains sealed for forensic investigations, a private contractor has been brought in to urgently carve out a temporary one-kilometre detour around the horror crash site. Families of the victims are currently waiting for formal identification processes to be completed.
Ongoing Investigations
This remains a developing story. Sona Headlines will provide more updates as official forensic reports from the ZRP and the Bomb Squad are released.
