Blood is thicker than controversy. After months of publicly distancing himself from his sister's mounting legal woes, flamboyant clergyman Prophet Passion Java finally made his presence felt at the Harare Magistrates Courts. Surrounded by family members, Java attended the pre-sentence hearing of his sister, Mavis Java Madzivanzira, who is currently navigating a high-profile Financial Fraud Investigation.
Mavis, alongside her accomplice Pauline Gutsa, was officially convicted on Tuesday after a grueling full trial. The duo was found guilty on Nine Counts of Fraud involving US$120,000—an elaborate scheme that preyed on desperate land seekers using forged City of Harare documents and Trust Account Breaches. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of Public Accountability in the property sector.

The Show of Solidarity
The presence of Prophet Passion Java at the Harare Magistrates Courts marked a significant shift. For months, the high-profile religious figure had avoided the optics of his sister's trial.
A Public Show of Support
The Pre-Sentence Hearing: Java arrived with other family members to attend Mavis's pre-sentence hearing following her Tuesday conviction. While he had previously distanced his personal brand from her alleged criminality, the reality of her impending incarceration seemingly prompted a public display of familial solidarity.
The Cleared Lawyer
The Co-Accused: The pair had originally been charged alongside Harare lawyer Proud Mutuso. However, Magistrate Chakanyuka officially cleared Mutuso of any wrongdoing, noting that the State failed to prove any links to the crime, especially given that the lawyer was physically in South Sudan when the fraudulent transactions occurred.
The Anatomy of the $120k Scam
Prosecutor Oscar Madhume meticulously dismantled the operations of Segimel Investments, the company co-directed by Mavis Java and Pauline Gutsa, revealing exactly how they managed to siphon US$119,000 from unsuspecting buyers.
Forged City Plans
The Hook: The duo misrepresented themselves as legitimate real estate brokers selling prime residential stands in high-value suburbs including Milton Park, Vainona, Logan Park, and Gunhill. To solidify the scam, they produced convincing, yet entirely forged, 'Harare City Council site plans' for the proposed subdivisions.
The Council Verification
The Collapse: The syndicate crumbled when suspicious victims directly approached the City of Harare to verify the status of their newly purchased land. Council officials confirmed that the stands simply did not exist in the local authority’s database, prompting immediate police reports.
The Victims and The Trust Account Trap
The fraud succeeded because the perpetrators utilized legal loopholes and trust accounts to create a false sense of security for buyers dealing with massive sums of cash.
Farai Chikiwa's $97,450 Loss
The Biggest Hit: In September 2019, Farai Chikiwa—a director of two construction companies—was duped into buying three stands in Milton Park for US$15,000 each. Believing the deal was legitimate, she purchased six more stands in Vainona and Logan Park for herself and Naledi Maunganidze. She deposited a staggering US$97,450 into the pair’s attorney’s trust account. The promised offer letters never arrived.
Fortune Rukara's Greendale Trap
The Empty Escrow: On June 19, 2019, Fortune Rukara negotiated to buy a Greendale stand for US$20,000. To protect himself, he insisted on a lawyer drafting an agreement of sale, depositing the US$20,000 into a lawyer’s trust account. The funds were only to be released upon receipt of the deed of cession. However, the duo somehow bypassed this safeguard, emptying the trust account and disappearing before Rukara discovered the "stand" was not zoned for residential use.
Sona Headlines Verdict
The Real Estate Minefield
This case highlights the extreme dangers of Zimbabwe's unregulated real estate market. The fact that an experienced director of two construction companies (Chikiwa) could be defrauded of nearly $100,000 using fake City of Harare site plans proves how sophisticated these syndicates have become. Buyers must absolutely verify land status directly with the City Council before any money changes hands.
The Failure of Trust Accounts
The most alarming detail of this trial is how easily the perpetrators circumvented legal escrow. Victim Fortune Rukara did everything right—using a lawyer and a trust account—yet the funds were still illegally released to Mavis Java and her accomplice before the deed was provided. This exposes severe vulnerabilities in how some legal practitioners manage client funds in escrow.
