A Barrage of Insults. The social media personality's decision to post the video unleashed a wave of unprovoked attacks against Zodwa Mkandla, her daughter Mello, and her partner Denzel Tadiwa Maveve. This digital attack ultimately resulted in Mkandla filing criminal charges, demonstrating the severe legal consequences of online harassment in Zimbabwe.
The Statutory Record
Cyberbullying, digital harassment, and issuing threats of physical violence against minors.
The TikTok Tirade
Prosecutor Kanchelskis Ropi detailed the sequence of events to the court, explaining that on Wednesday last week, Zodwa came across a TikTok video posted by the accused.
In the video, Princess hurled highly offensive language, calling Zodwa a "prostitute."
The abuse extended to Zodwa's family. Kissmore Soko specifically targeted Mkandla's daughter, Mello, labelling her the “daughter of a prostitute.” She also directed insults at Denzel Tadiwa Maveve.
Threats of Physical Harm
The court heard that Princess went as far as threatening to harm Mello, stating she would physically "beat her up" if she ever met her in person.
Inside the Courtroom
Princess Phiri appeared before Harare magistrate Michael Mafukidze. Faced with the evidence of the viral video, she entered a guilty plea for the charges levelled against her.
Following her plea, she was remanded in custody until tomorrow, where the court will officially record the plea and determine the next steps regarding her sentencing.
Police Action
The arrest was executed rapidly following the formal complaint by the businesswoman. Princess Phiri was apprehended by authorities on Saturday.
Harare police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the arrest over the weekend, underscoring the authorities' commitment to prosecuting cyberbullying offenses.
