Visibility is Not Viability. On Saturday night, the Harare International Convention Centre (HICC) hosted the 24th National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA). The theme was "Fearless Creativity," but the biggest lesson of the night was about Data vs. Reality.
The shock of the evening? Comic Elder walking away empty-handed despite boasting a digital following of 1.2 million. He lost the Outstanding Social Media Skits award to Tokoloshe (Code Red Studios) and the People’s Choice Award to Winky D. This result has sparked a national debate on the value of social media numbers.
| The "Popcorn Audience" Effect: Why millions of views didn't translate to a single trophy for Comic Elder. |
From a business strategy perspective, the logic that "more followers equals more votes" is flawed. Followers represent Potential Energy. Awards and Sales represent Kinetic Energy. If you cannot convert attention into action, your numbers are merely decoration.
Case Study: The Illusion of Volume
Comic Elder walked away empty-handed. He was nominated alongside Sean Khoza (Tokoloshe) and Thugga Thugga. Despite the massive follower count (1.2M+), he lost.
The Strategic Insight: You can have 1 million followers and still lose to someone with 300k if you don't mobilize them. Tokoloshe didn't need more followers; he needed more action per follower. This is the difference between a passive audience that consumes content and an active audience that supports the brand.
For the Outstanding Social Media Skits category, adjudication isn't just about popularity—it's about product quality. Tokoloshe's content is constructive, high-production, and exportable. NAMA rewarded value over volume, proving that technical excellence (the product) still matters in a noisy market.
Winky D: The Retention Master
Winky D scooped the People’s Choice Award, extending a record-breaking run. His previous wins span from 2011 to 2025. He defeated Jah Prayzah (2M followers) and Comic Elder (1.2M followers) despite having fewer Facebook followers than both.
The Lesson: Customer Loyalty (Retention) is far more valuable than Viral Spikes (Acquisition). Winky D has built a "cult brand" that converts on demand.
Winky D also took home the Outstanding Music Video award for "Fake Love," directed by Jusa Dementor. This reinforces that popularity must be backed by a premium product.
Nisha Ts: The Power of Storytelling
The race for Song of the Year was tight. Jah Prayzah's "Ruzhowa" had 6.5M views, Nisha Ts's "Admire Kadembo" had 6.4M, and Nutty O's "Too Much" had 5.1M.
While Nutty O won Song of the Year, Nisha Ts stole the show's emotional heart by winning Outstanding Female Artist. In a moment that defined the night, she invited her grandmother onto the stage.
“This woman is my backbone... She looked after me when no one else could.”
Nisha Ts executed perfect Brand Storytelling. By honouring her grandmother and thanking mentor Tinashe Mutarisi, she created an emotional connection that transcends music. Brands that connect emotionally build advocates, not just customers.

The Executive Takeaway
The Conversion Audit
Before you complain about competitors "stealing" your market share, audit your own strategy:
- Mobilization: Did you tell your audience what to do, or just hope they would do it?
- Value: Is your product exportable quality (like Tokoloshe), or just local noise?
- Retention: Do you have loyal advocates like Winky D, or just passive followers?
Numbers without strategy are decoration. And decoration does not win awards, nor does it pay salaries.
