Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe (28) and co-accused Tobias Tamirepi Matonhodze (33) are set to remain in custody following a sudden pivot in their legal strategy at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court. The defense team has officially abandoned their bail application in favor of initiating plea negotiations. This shift follows the emergence of critical complications regarding the duo's legal immigration status in South Africa, which has fundamentally altered the trajectory of the proceedings.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that the case has been postponed to late March to allow for the formalization of the plea deal. In addition to the attempted murder charges, the 28-year-old son of the late Robert Mugabe faces prosecution for contravening the Immigration Act. This high-profile development signals a move toward a swift judicial conclusion as the state continues to scrutinize the residency credentials of both suspects.

The Bail Bid Collapse

The decision to drop the bail application is directly tied to the pair’s legal status in South Africa. They have been officially charged with contravening the Immigration Act—which allows Zimbabweans to stay in the country without a visa for a maximum of 90 days. Being documented as illegal immigrants effectively eliminated their chances of securing bail.

The Lawyer's Statement

Defence lawyer Sinenhlanhla Mnguni confirmed the prosecution brought the illegal status to their attention. “We must remember that there are multiple charges. And, of course, we need to take instructions on each and every one... failing which, of course, the matter can then proceed to trial.”

NPA Confirms Negotiations

NPA Gauteng spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole confirmed that Mugabe and Matonhodze have officially entered into plea negotiations, though the specific terms of the potential deal remain undisclosed.

The Hyde Park Shooting

The charges stem from a violent altercation that took place at Mugabe’s Hyde Park residence on 19 February 2026, resulting in an employee being shot.

The Official Charges

Beyond the immigration violations, the two men are facing severe criminal charges including attempted murder, pointing a firearm, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and defeating the ends of justice.

Victim & Evidence Status

The victim, whose identity is currently protected, was admitted to the hospital in critical condition with no recent updates provided. Notably, the firearm used in the shooting has still not been located by authorities.

A History of Controversy

The case has cast a renewed spotlight on the Mugabe family’s history of legal troubles and highly publicized incidents of flaunting wealth abroad.

Previous South African Run-Ins

In 2017, Grace Mugabe allegedly assaulted a model in Sandton and left the country under diplomatic immunity—a decision later reversed by the courts in 2018. That same year, Bellarmine and Robert Jr. were reportedly evicted from an R70,000-a-month Morningside apartment following a violent brawl.

Domestic Legal Issues

Between 2017 and 2025, the family has faced various domestic challenges in Zimbabwe, including property damage, possession of cannabis, and alleged assaults on security personnel and police officers.

Accountability for the Elite: As Zimbabwean social justice activist Tendai Ruben Mbofana noted, this trial taps into deep-seated public concerns regarding power and privilege. For many Zimbabweans, this case represents a rare instance where individuals connected to immense historical power are being held publicly accountable.
