"I Told Them To Behave": Grace Mugabe Furious At Son’s Arrest For Attempted Murder
Harare & Johannesburg • February 20, 2026
The Matriarch's Response. Reports from within the Mugabe family inner circle suggest that former First Lady Grace Mugabe is profoundly distressed following the arrest of her youngest son, Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe (28), in Johannesburg. Faced with an attempted murder charge involving a gardener at the Hyde Park residence, the former First Lady is reportedly confronting a "breaking point" after years of private warnings regarding her sons' public conduct and legal challenges.
| Patience Exhausted: Sources say Grace Mugabe has been lecturing her sons to "behave" following a string of legal scandals. |
This incident marks yet another chapter in the family’s documented history of legal friction in both Zimbabwe and South Africa. For the Mugabe family, the latest allegations—which have already drawn intense scrutiny from South African authorities and the public alike—threaten to revive difficult memories of past controversies, placing Grace Mugabe once again at the center of a high-profile media storm.
Breaking Point
"She has been speaking to her children, telling them to behave... The former First Lady is very angry," a close source revealed to SABC News.
"I Told You To Behave"
A well-placed source with strong connections to the family shared details of Grace's anger with SABC News.
“I spoke to someone who has a strong relationship with the Mugabe family. He indicated to me that the former first lady... is very angry because she has been speaking to her children, telling them to behave.”
The source noted that this frustration stems from repeated incidents, including Chatunga's older brother, Robert Mugabe Jnr, being arrested in Zimbabwe last year for cannabis possession.
The Hyde Park Siege
Police reports indicate that Mugabe initially locked himself inside the house for two hours while officers negotiated with him and his friend.
A black BMW fitted with white lights, similar to those used on VIP vehicles, was seized from the property as evidence. It is believed to have transported two men and a woman prior to the police’s arrival.
SAPS spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed the suspects are uncooperative regarding the missing weapon.
“They have not told us where the gun is, they are not saying anything about the gun. We cannot definitely say who shot.”
A History of Controversy
The arrest marks another scandal for the Mugabe family. Last year, Robert Mugabe Jnr was fined US$300 after admitting to possession of cannabis in Zimbabwe.
Ironically, Grace herself is no stranger to South African legal trouble, having been accused of assaulting model Gabriella Engels with an electrical cord at a Johannesburg hotel in 2017.
Court Battle Ahead
Chatunga and his co-accused are expected to appear before the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court soon.
The Mugabe family’s lawyer in Zimbabwe, Ashley Mugiya, has confirmed that local South African legal representatives will be handling the case.
