Caught on the Tightrope: Gift Amuli Risks Freedom in Secret Meeting with First Farai!

Did Gift Amuli Violate Bail? Sungura Star Meets Complainant Despite Court Order

A High-Stakes Legal Tightrope. The Zimbabwean capital is buzzing with news of a dramatic confrontation that has shifted from the recording studio to the courtroom. Gift Amuli, the legendary Sungura musician, is back in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. Just days after enduring two nights in police custody on allegations of cyberbullying, Amuli appears to have risked his newfound freedom. Reports have emerged of a clandestine, three-hour private meeting between Amuli and his rival, First Farai—the very individual the court explicitly ordered him to avoid as a condition of his release.

Discordant Notes in Harare. This meeting has sent shockwaves through the local music industry, as legal experts warn that such "back-door" diplomacy could be interpreted as witness interference or a direct violation of bail conditions. The roots of the feud trace back to historic allegations of theft that Amuli aired on social media, leading to his recent arrest. By engaging with Farai outside the presence of legal counsel, Amuli has turned a simple defamation case into a public spectacle that threatens his career. Whether this was an attempt at reconciliation or a heated confrontation, the move has placed the "Wamatuka" hitmaker in a precarious position as his next court date looms.

THE TEASE: While the two have "buried the hatchet," the meeting technically contradicts bail conditions barring interference with state witnesses.

Strict Bail Conditions

Amuli was granted US$200 bail by Magistrate Ruth Moyo last Friday. The conditions were explicit: reside at the given address, report weekly to CID, and crucially, do not interfere with State witnesses.

As the complainant, First Farai is the key State witness. The three-hour meeting yesterday, arranged to "iron out differences," effectively brought the accused and the witness into a room together while the trial is pending.

The Cyber Attack

The arrest stemmed from a Facebook post on January 20, following First Farai's election as ZIMURA vice-chair. Amuli allegedly posted:

“Murume wekuba mari panhamo wozvipa chigaro kuita hushamwari hwembavha.” (A man who steals money at a funeral giving himself a position...)

This referred to old, disputed allegations from 2011 regarding funeral funds for the late Cephas Mashakada—claims that Mashakada’s own family has dismissed as baseless.

Burying the Hatchet

Despite the legal risks, veteran promoter Partson “Chipaz” Chimbodza brokered a truce. Yesterday, Amuli and First Farai met in Harare and announced they had reconciled.

"I felt it was my duty to resolve this matter... It is detrimental for top artists to be fighting on social media," Chipaz stated.

First Farai confirmed he is consulting lawyers to withdraw the charges. "I believe Amuli has learned his lesson after spending two nights in jail. As a family man, he needs to return to work," Farai said.

Public Apology

Amuli has released a video apology to the nation and First Farai. "I would like to take this opportunity to apologise... I am aware that my case is still in the courts. I am truly sorry for my behaviour and have learned my lesson."

While the reconciliation is good for the industry, Amuli is still scheduled to return to court on March 10, where the formal withdrawal must be processed.
