Warriors Get US$250,000 Windfall From Wicknell Chivayo After AFCON Heartbreak
January 1, 2026 — In an astonishing display of gratitude, businessman Wicknell Chivayo has gifted the Zimbabwe Warriors a US$250,000 (approx. R4.5 million) cash reward.
Despite the team’s heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to South Africa and subsequent exit from the 2025 AFCON, Chivayo chose to honor the team's bravery and effort during the tournament in Morocco.
A Controversial Consolation Prize
The surprise bonus was announced directly to the players at Chishawasha Hills on Wednesday, December 31, 2025. This payout follows Chivayo’s earlier pledge to give the squad US$2 million if they had secured the AFCON title. Even though the ultimate dream ended in Morocco, the businessman insisted that the team's performance warranted a significant token of appreciation.
"Yatsika Yanwa": The Rationale
Taking to social media, Chivayo explained his decision to reward the players despite the loss:
“For many Zimbabweans, it may be a DISAPPOINTING END for the Warriors... However, I personally take pride in the FIGHTING SPIRIT they showed from the beginning right until the FINAL whistle. Where others see a loss, I see BRAVERY and EFFORT.”
He concluded his announcement with the traditional Shona idiom “Vakuru vakati YATSIKA YANWA,” emphasizing that the effort itself deserved to be quenched.
Celebration vs. Remorse
The windfall comes at a time of deep reflection for the squad. Captain Marvelous Nakamba took full responsibility for the handball that led to South Africa's winning penalty. “I have to man up and accept the mistake... I am sorry to the country, to my teammates and to everyone in Zimbabwe,” Nakamba stated shortly before the reward was announced.
Despite the exit, the campaign had bright spots. Youngster Tawanda Maswanhise scored a world-class goal that was voted CAF's 'Move of the Day.' However, defensive lapses between Divine Lunga and Washington Arubi eventually proved costly in the 3-2 thriller.
