Court Fines Zimdancehall Singer Shinsoman and Friends Over Smoking Mbanje

Zimdancehall Singer Shinsoman Fined US$200 for Smoking Mbanje

Popular Zimdancehall artist Romeo Antony, widely known by his stage name Shinsoman, has been fined US$200 by a Zimbabwean court after pleading guilty to smoking mbanje. The court ruling also saw four of his friends fined in connection with the same offence, as authorities continue to enforce Zimbabwe’s drug laws.

The case adds to a growing list of Zimbabwean entertainment figures facing legal action, highlighting the legal risks artists face and the importance of compliance within the country’s music and entertainment industry.

Magistrate's Ruling

Shinsoman (37) appeared before Mbare magistrate Ranga Gakanje yesterday. According to The Herald, the court fined each of the accused US$200 or four months’ imprisonment in default of payment.

In addition to the fine, magistrate Gakanje imposed a three-month prison sentence, which was suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. The suspended sentence will remain effective provided the men are not convicted again for smoking mbanje during that period.

Arrest Details

According to the State, the five men reside at the same house in Engineering, Highfield, Harare. On January 5, at around 6:30 pm, detectives conducting a follow-up investigation spotted the group standing near a parked Mercedes-Benz and passing around a hand-rolled cigarette.

Suspecting it to be a mbanje joint, the officers approached the men. Upon confrontation, the group reluctantly surrendered the cigarette, which was confirmed to contain mbanje. The joint was seized from Shinsoman, leading to the arrest of all five suspects. They were taken to the CID Drugs and Narcotics Department for further investigations before appearing in court.

Five Appear Before Magistrate

Shinsoman appeared together with:

  1. Themba Sibanda (26)
  2. Shumba Tendai (43)
  3. Kennedy Simbanegavi (37)
  4. Cosmas Muzanzi (41)

All five admitted to the offence.

Shinsoman Fined: Lessons for Fans and the Music Industry

The recent fine of Zimdancehall star Shinsoman highlights the importance of accountability, even for public figures. While the music industry continues to thrive, this incident serves as a reminder that actions have consequences.
