The Heist: December 2023

Owen was pulling double duty: attending classes by day and working security by night to pay tuition.

On the night of the incident, Owen was inside the guardroom, using the quiet hours to finish his final year dissertation for the MSU School of Social Work. His security dog was by his side when it suddenly became alarmed.

Owen stepped outside to investigate and walked straight into a nightmare. Confronted by armed robbers, he was held at gunpoint. They forced him to silence and lock away his dog. In a cruel twist, they used Owen’s own handcuffs to restrain him, forcing him to the floor.

The gang used a grinder to cut open a safe, stealing $238,000. They then forced Owen to dig a hole outside where they believed more cash was buried, unearthing another $2,700.

From Victim to Suspect

When the dust settled, Owen reported the crime and the money left behind. The courts, however, viewed this differently.

THE ELECTRONICS

Suspicious Circumstance

While guards at a neighbouring property had phones stolen, Owen’s phone and laptop were left untouched.

THE LEFTOVER CASH

Honesty or Ploy?

The court found it suspicious that he reported the money left behind, rather than viewing it as a sign of innocence.

THE CARETAKER

Missing Witness?

The on-site caretaker claimed to have slept through the noise of the grinder, casting further doubt on who was involved.

Studying Through the Storm

An Award-Winning Graduate

Throughout the trauma, Owen didn't stop. Although initially remanded in January 2024, he was later allowed home while the case moved to the High Court.

During this agonising wait, he completed his final semester. Not only did he graduate, but he also received an award from his university for outstanding dedication, all while facing the possibility of life behind bars.

The Clock is Ticking

Today, the graduation gown has been traded for a prison uniform.

Sentence: 17 Years

Unless the verdict is overturned, Owen will not walk free until he is 47 years old. The appeal is expected to be heard in the High Court within the next 8 days.

His family maintains his absolute innocence. They argue that if he were guilty, he would have fled or kept the leftover money. Instead, he stayed.

They are pleading for public assistance to cover urgent legal fees and basic prison necessities like food and toiletries.
