Category: Entertainment / Chimurenga Music | Venue: Newtown Music Factory, JHB

It was dubbed "The Last Dance," and it lived up to every ounce of its hype. Chimurenga music legend, Dr. Thomas "Mukanya" Mapfumo, delivered his emotional farewell performance to South Africa on Saturday night. In a packed Newtown Music Factory, the veteran musician closed the curtain on decades of live performances in Mzansi, delivering the set from his seat—a testament to his endurance and the toll of age, yet with a spirit that remains unbroken.

While physically frail, the "Final Bira" proved that Mukanya’s voice—that signature raspy baritone—remains as commanding as ever. As he bid adieu, he also subtly passed the torch to the next generation.

The Lion Takes a Seat

Mukanya delivered almost his entire set while seated, acknowledging the physical limitations of his advanced age. Yet, the energy in the room did not dip. The crowd, understanding the gravity of the moment, treated the seated performance with reverence rather than disappointment.

Serenading the hundreds in attendance, Mapfumo took a journey through his illustrious discography. Hits such as "Hwahwa," "Mamvemve," and "Hondo" rang out through the venue, triggering nostalgia and emotional singalongs from the diasporan crowd.

Passing the Baton: Kurai Makore

"The evidence is there that he is being prepared to fill Mukanya’s boots."

THE SUCCESSOR

Kurai Makore

Mapfumo's nephew, Kurai Makore, delivered a stellar performance that many viewed as an audition passed with flying colors. With a growing army of fans in South Africa, Kurai demonstrated that when the legend finally retires, the Chimurenga legacy will continue with little difficulty.

Youth Meets Experience

Bringing a youthful flair to the lineup, Holy Ten delivered a solid show as one of the main supporting acts. His presence drew a significant number of younger fans to the venue, creating a bridge between the Chimurenga traditionalists and the modern Hip Hop generation.

Keeping the crowd on their feet until the early hours of Sunday morning were MC Rico Myers, Inno B, and Mr Gee Warrior, who seamlessly blended genres to celebrate Zimbabwe's musical heritage.
