"We Are Part of the Solution": Church Leaders Urged to Embrace Ex-Prisoners
Key Figure: Rev. Dr. Noah Pashapa
Event: ZPCS Parole Conference, Harare | Focus: Prison Reform & Social Reintegration
Church leaders have been challenged to step out of the pulpit and into the prisons. Speaking on the sidelines of the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) Parole Conference in Harare, renowned clergyman and academic Reverend Dr. Noah Pashapa issued a clarion call for the church to play a leading role in destigmatizing and reintegrating ex-inmates back into society.
Ending Stigma, restoring Lives
Rev. Pashapa, the founding president of Prison Ministries International, emphasized that the church must be proactive in the transformative agenda of corrections.
"We, as church leaders, should view ourselves as part of the solution... Churches should prepare by supporting and enhancing the reintegration of the ex-inmates and teach communities to avoid stigmatising them."
He noted that beneficiaries of the parole system have already proven high levels of behavioral reform, yet they often face a cold shoulder from society upon release.
Highlighting the fragility of freedom, Rev. Pashapa added a sobering reminder:
"Communities tend to forget that everyone is a potential prisoner. Even if you do not commit an offence, you can be accused and find yourself behind bars."
He urged church members to change their social engagement with returning citizens, advocating for training in victim/offender reconciliation and correctional care.
