The sporting world has been plunged into mourning this Monday, December 29, 2025, following a horrific accident involving British-Nigerian heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. While the boxing icon miraculously survived the crash on the notorious Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the incident claimed the lives of two of his closest friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Joshua, currently in a stable condition in a Lagos hospital, has issued a statement of "profound sadness" as the £100m Tyson Fury mega-fight hangs in the balance.

Horror on "Nigeria's Deadliest Road"
The accident occurred around 11:00 AM WAT in the Makun area near Sagamu, Ogun State. Anthony Joshua was traveling in a Lexus SUV as part of a two-vehicle convoy. Eyewitness reports indicate the vehicle lost control while attempting to overtake at high speed and slammed violently into a stationary truck on the highway.
Joshua was reportedly seated behind the driver. The impact was catastrophic for the front passenger and the other rear passenger, while Joshua and another occupant survived with injuries. His security detail, trailing in a Pajero SUV, immediately initiated rescue efforts alongside local passersby.
Remembering Sina and Latif
The victims have been identified as Latif "Latz" Ayodele and Sina Ghami.
- Latif Ayodele: A personal trainer and childhood friend of Joshua. Just hours before the crash, Joshua had posted a video of them playing table tennis together.
- Sina Ghami: Joshua's long-time strength and conditioning coach who was in his corner for the recent victory against Jake Paul. He had reportedly just arrived in Nigeria to join Joshua for the holiday.
Their deaths have devastated Team AJ, with the spokesperson confirming the loss with "profound sadness."
Official Statements & Health Update
A spokesperson for Anthony Joshua released a statement: "Anthony sustained injuries in the accident and was taken to hospital for checks and treatment. He is in a stable condition and will remain there for observation."
The Ogun State Government further clarified that Joshua is conscious and communicating with his family, ruling out the need for immediate emergency medical intervention. However, the emotional toll of the event is expected to be immense.
Promoter Eddie Hearn, speaking from his family holiday, expressed shock: "We are trying to contact Anthony... thankfully he appears OK from what I have seen in the images. We are awaiting more information on what has happened and will update in due course."
Context: The Fury Mega-Fight
This tragedy strikes just weeks after Joshua’s career-high victory over Jake Paul in Miami. He was in Nigeria to celebrate and reconnect with his roots in Sagamu before starting camp for a planned £100m superfight against Tyson Fury in early 2026. With Joshua injured and grieving the loss of key team members, the future of the biggest fight in British boxing history is now shrouded in doubt.
