Two Dead, Boxing Icon Injured: Anthony Joshua Survives Fatal Car Crash in Nigeria

Tragedy struck the sporting world on Monday, December 29, 2025, as former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a horrific car accident in Ogun State, Nigeria. While the British-Nigerian boxing superstar miraculously survived with minor injuries, the crash claimed the lives of two other occupants. The incident occurred near his ancestral hometown of Sagamu, casting a dark shadow over his homecoming following a recent victory against Jake Paul.

Horror on the Expressway

The crash occurred around 11:00 AM WAT along the Makun stretch of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, near the Sagamu interchange. Joshua was traveling in a Lexus SUV as part of a two-vehicle convoy. Reports indicate the vehicle collided violently with a stationary truck on the highway—a notorious hazard on Nigerian roads. His security detail was following in a Pajero SUV behind the crash.

The location of the accident is deeply significant. Joshua, 36, has extensive family roots in Sagamu, Ogun State. Despite being born in Watford, UK, he has always fiercely embraced his Nigerian heritage ("Proudly Nigerian and Proudly British") and was reportedly in the country for a holiday break to reconnect with his roots after his recent fight.

Casualties & Survivors

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ogun Command confirmed the fatalities. Spokesperson Afolabi Odunsi stated: "It’s true, but he [Joshua] is alive. About five people were involved, two died." While identities remain unreleased, eyewitnesses report that the passenger seated directly beside the driver was among those who died on the spot.

Footage circulated on social media showed a dazed Joshua being assisted out of the wreckage by passersby. He sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Local authorities and his team have confirmed he is "doing fine" and is in stable condition, though visibly shaken by the tragic loss of life.

Reactions & Statements

Eyewitness Adeniyi Orojo described the chaotic scene to The Punch: "It was a two-vehicle convoy... There was also a passenger sitting beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed... Other eyewitnesses and I began the rescue and flagged down oncoming vehicles to assist. The passenger beside the driver and Joshua [aide] died on the spot."

Joshua's promoter, Eddie Hearn, awoke to the news while on holiday. He told the Daily Mail: "We are trying to contact Anthony... thankfully he appears OK from what I have seen in the images. We are awaiting more information on what has happened and will update in due course."

Context: A Career High

This tragedy occurs just weeks after Joshua returned to the global stage with a dominant performance. He secured a sixth-round stoppage win over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami earlier in December 2025. He was taking a short break in Nigeria before beginning preparations for a ring return scheduled for early 2026.
