Rapper Maskiri Nabbed in Dramatic "Fake Gig" Police Sting Over US$1,500 Goat Scam

Sona Headlines | Crime & Courts

Zimbabwean rapper Maskiri (Alishias Musimbe) found himself in handcuffs yesterday after a dramatic police sting operation in Chitungwiza. The musician, who recently ventured into livestock breeding, was arrested at a Chicken Inn outlet after walking into a trap set by detectives investigating a US$1,500 goat deal gone wrong.

Maskiri was arrested following a trap set by Chitungwiza police.

The "Boer Goat" Scandal

The case stems from a complaint by Tonderai Chisoro, a Zimbabwean based in the United States. Chisoro contacted Maskiri, who frequently advertises "Boer Kalahari Red" goat imports on social media, hoping to boost his family's livestock.

Chisoro alleges he sent US$1,500 via Mukuru in three separate transactions. However, the deal quickly soured. "When I started asking about the first delivery of five goats, the young man started changing goal posts," Chisoro told H-Metro. "One day he was in the rural areas, the next day he wasn’t picking up his calls. Eventually, he just went quiet."

The Sting Operation

With Maskiri allegedly ghosting the client, Chisoro's relatives filed a report at Chitungwiza Police Station (CR559/11/25). Detectives Dulani and Mushaninga devised a cunning plan to lure the elusive rapper out of hiding.

Posing as enthusiastic fans, the officers contacted Maskiri claiming they wanted to book him for a birthday party performance. They agreed on a booking fee of US$300, and Maskiri even promised to bring fellow artist Tererai Mugwadi to the show.

Chaos at Chicken Inn

The trap was set for Chicken Inn at Unit C junction in Chitungwiza. The officers told Maskiri they had secured a US$200 deposit for him. Unaware of the ruse, the rapper arrived at the fast-food outlet expecting a payday.

Witnesses report a chaotic scene as police swiftly apprehended the rapper. Adding to the drama, the InDrive driver who had transported Maskiri to the venue realized his client was being hauled away. The driver reportedly joined the commotion, demanding his fare from the police officers as they whisked the rapper away.

Police confirmed that none of the missing US$1,500 has been recovered so far.
