Mai Jeremaya, whose real name is Ashley Masendeke, is a prominent Zimbabwean socialite, comedian, actress, and writer. She is widely known for her viral comedy skits on social media, often punctuated by her signature catchphrase, "upenyu upenyu!". Before her rise to fame as a comedian, she built a career as a Human Resources professional, showcasing a diverse and dynamic background.
Early Life and Career Path
Background
Tragically, Mai Jeremaya's parents passed away from AIDS when she was just 7 years old, leaving her and her sister to be raised by their grandmother. Despite these early challenges, she pursued higher education, studying Human Resources Management at Midlands State University. After graduating, she worked in marketing for a bank and later for a microfinance institution.
Early Creative Pursuits
Before finding fame in comedy, Mai Jeremaya initially pursued a career in music. Her acting journey began in 2016, though she took a hiatus in 2018 to focus on her children. This demonstrates a long-held passion for the creative arts that predates her social media stardom.
Rise to Fame in Comedy
The Return in 2021
Mai Jeremaya made a powerful return to her creative endeavors in 2021. Her comeback was significantly facilitated by fellow entertainer Shugeta (DJ Shugeta), who helped reintroduce her to the public, this time through the medium of comedy skits that quickly went viral.
Signature Style
Her comedy, often centered on relatable life situations and social commentary, resonated deeply with Zimbabweans. Her signature phrase, "upenyu upenyu!", became a household expression, cementing her status as a leading social media personality and comedian.
The 2025 Legal Case
The Allegations
In May 2025, Mai Jeremaya became the subject of intense media attention following allegations of rape. She accused two men, Thabo Blessing Dube and Martin Charlie, of luring her to a purported business meeting in Harare on April 30th and subsequently raping her at a lodge in Eastlea. Waiving her right to anonymity, she brought the case into the public domain through an emotional social media video.
The Defense's Counter-Narrative
The accused men, Dube and Charlie, presented a starkly different account. They claimed the encounter was consensual paid sex for an agreed-upon fee of $20. Their defense argued that the rape allegation only emerged after Mai Jeremaya allegedly attempted to extort a higher payment of $500 from them, a claim that set the stage for a contentious legal battle.
The Trial and Acquittal
During the trial, notable testimonies emerged, including a claim from one of the accused that Mai Jeremaya had praised his performance in bed. On July 4, 2025, the two men were found not guilty and were acquitted of the rape charges.
Following the verdict, Mai Jeremaya commented that she had anticipated the outcome due to insufficient evidence but had wanted to see the court process through to its conclusion.
Public and Media Reaction
The case ignited a firestorm on social media, with public opinion sharply divided. The hashtag #JusticeForMaiJeremaya became a powerful rallying cry, mobilizing thousands of users who expressed their support for her and condemned sexual assault, highlighting the significant role of social media in modern social issues.
