Mai Jeremaya Rape Accusation Takes Twist as Suspects Claim Paid Encounter

Alleged Sexual Assault Case Shifts Focus After Men Say They Paid US$20 for Consensual Sex

Harare – Two men arrested for allegedly raping Zimbabwean socialite Mai Jeremaya were released on bail Tuesday, as the prosecution did not oppose their freedom, citing no significant risk of them fleeing trial.

Thabo Blessing Dube (27) and Martin Charlie (25) were arrested over the weekend following allegations of sexual assault involving the well-known social media figure.

Disputed Agreement Over Payment

According to court documents, Dube and Charlie claimed that the incident stemmed from a consensual arrangement made at Joina City in Harare’s central business district, where they allege Mai Jeremaya agreed to sexual intercourse for a fee of US$20.

The trio then proceeded to a lodge in Eastlea, where Charlie is said to have had sex with her. However, after the encounter, the socialite allegedly demanded US$500 instead of the agreed US$20.

“She wanted US$500 but we had agreed on US$20,” the men stated in their affidavit. “She knew she was at a lodge for sex,” they added.

Private Investigator Called Before Rape Report

Following the payment dispute, the accused claim Mai Jeremaya engaged a private investigator, identified as Detective Kedha, to recover the higher amount she believed she was owed.

“When we refused to pay the US$500, a rape report was then made,” read the statement provided to the court.

State Says No Grounds to Deny Bail

Despite the gravity of the allegations, prosecutors did not push for continued detention, with the State asserting that there were no compelling reasons to deny the men bail.

“It is the State’s view that such forceful and convincing reasons, which would make the court feel very strongly that the accused should not be released on bail, do not exist,” prosecutors said.

Court filings highlighted that both men have fixed residential addresses, no known previous convictions, and exhibited no behavior suggesting they might attempt to flee.

Case Continues as Public Watches Closely

The matter remains under judicial consideration and has sparked widespread public interest given the high profile of Mai Jeremaya, who boasts a significant following on social media.

The accused are expected to return to court for trial proceedings as investigations continue.
