Embracing Identity & Origins

Tariro Gezi isn't afraid to embrace her African features. In a world dominated by cosmetic enhancements, she addressed the questions surrounding her physique directly during her Star FM interview.

"I'm one of the few people who can actually say I got it from my mama! She was my sponsor. Those who know my mom, Mai Gezi, know exactly where I got this body from," Tariro laughed.

While she maintains her figure with a personal trainer four times a week, the foundation is purely genetic. She proudly traces her roots to Murehwa (maternal) and Gokwe (paternal), asserting her Zimbabwean identity.

Her path to prominence wasn't linear. Raised by her grandparents in Bulawayo after her mother left for South Africa for work, Tariro considers the "City of Kings and Queens" her home. "I grew up in a family setting with both grandparents, so I can't complain. Life was great," she shared, revealing she still visits every December to keep her grandmother's memory alive.

The Early Days: Innovation in Retail

Before the viral Africa Day photoshoot, Tariro faced significant hardships. Following the death of her stepfather while she was in Form 4, university became unaffordable. Forced to grow up fast to support her siblings, she took a job as a sales rep at Edgars.

It was here she honed her skills. "I asked my manager if I could wear the clothes instead of leaving them on hangers," she recalled. "When civil servants came in, they would see the dress on me and want it. I won 'Best Sales Rep' for eight weeks continuously." This innovative spirit marked the beginning of her journey as a brand influencer.

From "Soffad Babe" to Resilience

Tariro's narrative took a difficult turn when she married young. Her ex-husband promised to fund her education (ACCA), but after she became pregnant, she fell into the role of a traditional stay-at-home wife.

"I wasn't allowed on social media. My job was church, cleaning, cooking, and watching TV. I was a 'soffad' babe," she admitted.

This period of her life was restrictive, delaying her dreams and creative endeavors.

When the marriage collapsed and her husband left the country, Tariro hit rock bottom. Unable to tell her mother she had been abandoned, she moved back to the "ghetto" and did whatever it took to survive.

"I started selling freezits, then water. At the Agricultural Show, I stood in lines selling drinks and multiplied my money by 20 times in a day," she revealed. This grueling experience taught her the value of financial independence. "Even a dollar matters. There is peace that comes with knowing you bought your own lip gloss."

The Future Unfolds

Gezi's rise hasn't been without controversy. She recently faced backlash for advising young women to prioritize empowerment over marriage. Critics called her bitter, but she clarified her stance to V Candy.

"There is a very thin line between submission and stupidity. My message to my 'girlies' is simply: Empower yourself first. Know who you are, have your own money, and plan your life. Don't just wait to be a dependent."

Tariro Gezi's story is far from over. Now happily dating and fully self-aware, she continues to leverage social media to advocate for financial independence and self-expression. Regardless of perspective, Gezi is undeniably a conversation starter, forcing the industry to celebrate the multifaceted nature of success.

As she continues to evolve, Sona Headlines will be here to chronicle her journey.
